Star Spangled Banner Day 1

US Frigate Constellation (1797-1853)
Warning! I am not an historian. My rendition of the events surrounding the writing of the Star Spangled Banner by Frances Scott Key might get jumbled. That's why tomorrow I will introduce you to Jane Hampton Cook, an historian who writes books about American events just like the Battle at Ft. McHenry.

If you stay with me to the end, there is a FREE quilt pattern and a FREE bundle of fabrics to one lucky visitor today.

Today is the first day of my Star Spangled Banner Extravaganza. The picture of the ship above is what our ancestors used to protect our harbors. Protect our harbors? From who, you may ask? Why, those pesky British who couldn't take "NO" for an answer back in 1776! We wanted to be independent (and who doesn't). They decided to come after us again,  using Canada as their land base and they first burned down the White House and then they came looking for a harbor to enter.

Baltimore is having a GIGANTIC celebration this week with all sorts of tall ships in the harbor. You can see some of the Visiting Ships to the Baltimore Harbor (Ft. McHenry) by clicking that link.

You can see all sorts of fabulous ships from around the world. They are open for visitors to go on board!  Here is the USS Constellation (built in 1854) that has Baltimore, MD as its home port.

Pride of Baltimore II, “America’s Star-Spangled Ambassador,” is a reproduction of the 1812-era Baltimore Clippers that helped America defeat the British in the War of 1812.

Now, how about some quilts that were from this era? The quilt below is from Barbara Brackman's blog (with permission) about quilts from The War of 1812. Visit her site to see some glorious examples of quilts from this era. I just purchased her Encyclopedia of Applique Blocks eBook (I own the hard copy) and she shows beautiful examples of broderie perse quits from that time period.

  52. This was interesting! I confess that my favorite American holiday is Halloween...although it comes from Ireland, immigrants brought it over, and it was quickly Americanized. For example, turnips with candles were replaced by indigenous pumpkins. To me, Halloween means personal freedom to explore alternative identities.

  60. It used to be Christmas because of the big family gathering. We still see at least one of our children and their family, but we are all so spread out that the big gathering just doesn't happen any more. Now I think it is Thanksgiving. Some of the family comes and then on Thanksgiving Day we fill our house with International students. We have had as many as 39 total of family and Internationals. And we might have Vietnamese spring rolls as well as the traditional American foods. We all look forward to it. Nancy: rangerer@sbcglobal.net
