Star Spangled Banner Day 5

I even crochet in patriotic colors!
Today is a somber day in America. It is the 13th anniversary of the fall of our Twin Towers in New York City. As we watched it unfold on our televisions all across the nation, we were so emotional. And then as the days went by, flags began to appear EVERYWHERE I looked: in the front of many houses on my street in Atlanta, in the front of stores, gas stations. Everywhere!

Here's my flag quilt again:

And here is a block I designed for my Block a Day Calendar with Martingale:

Star Spangled Banner block from from the Quilter's Block-A-Day Calendar (Martingale, 2007)
You can have the pattern for this 18" block FREE: Star Spangled Banner block

Would you like to see all the blocks? How about WINNING a copy of the companion CD? It has all 366 blocks in two sizes PLUS 12 quilts made from the blocks.

And then there's the FABRIC giveaway, right? How about 5 half-yard cuts of these from Benartex?

Five half-yard cuts of fabric is our prize today

DAY 5 CONTEST:

1. The contest is over at midnight tonight, September 11, 2014 (EST). (I have another contest tomorrow, so come back and bring your friends).

2. Fabrics and Calendar CD can only be mailed in the United States.

3. If I randomly select someone from outside the United States, you can have ANY of my patterns from my Craftsy site. I will email them to you (obviously, the ones that are for sale).

4. If I don't have your email, I can't notify you! Anonymous bloggers can't win!

OK. This is different: do you knit or crochet? What colors and types of yarn do you like to work with.

And come back tomorrow for more quilt inspiration, free patterns and of course, free fabric!

  1. Love the fabrics and the quilt calendar, dare I hope Mr. Random will pick number 1? I learned how to knit and crochet growing up, but it always hurt my wrists, so I never really got into it. I wish I could have. cdahlgren at live dot com

  2. I do love the Flag quilt. I wonder how many people will stop to remember 911. It was such a somber time for the whole nation. So many tears then and now. All the lives changed forever. God Bless them all.

  3. I both knit and crochet. For knitting I like to use wool, for crochet I most often use cotton.

  4. I love knitting, especially those easy ruffled scarves, with bright colors like turquoise, or black. Over the past few years, I've also done some crochet work, but I still need to review how to make each stitch. :0) Thanks for the giveaway - a nice way to remember this important date in our history.

  5. Unfortunately, I don't knit or crochet. I did try it as a youngster...but didn't make much...just long scarves. Luckily, my mother in law does both and is super at making items just for me!

  6. Such lovelies! I do knit and crochet. It's my favorite 'to go' project, esp. while driving in a car - so much easier to do when the roads get a little bumpy. I prefer soft yarns, but don't have any favorite. 9-11. Somber day, indeed.

  7. I crochet. Love using all colors.

  8. I can't crochet to save my life. All I can do is make one long chain. I used to knit in my teen years, but haven't done so in a very long time. I keep thinking I would like to get back into it again. The only yarn I remember using was Sayelle.

  9. I can knit. I guess hats are my specialty. Use mostly synthetic yarns.

  22. Hello Debby, love your fabrics for the giveaway, and such a great quilt block for today......I am sad to say I neither knit or crochet as I have arthritis in my thumbs so hard to hold those sticks, but I have a friend who crochets and we trade...I sew something for her, she for me...best of both worlds. Thank you for the giveaway.

  24. I have crocheted everything from fabric strips into rugs to angels made of #10 cotton thread. My favorite is 4ply. My choice of colors depends on the project.

  25. I knit, but I don't crochet. I usually knit dish cloths with other church members during our Knit Wits Bible study group and we donate them to our local food pantry. I only like to knit things that are quick and easy to finish! I use cotton yarn and tend to like the variegated colors...

  26. I crochet more than I quilt (gasp, I know!), knit a little. I do mostly doilies with cotton thread, but have crocheted with sizes ranging from rope (using my hands) all the way down to sewing thread (with an almost microscopic hook).

  27. I do both, usually in the winter. I like the bulky weight yarns. Love the fabrics. Thanks for the chance.

  28. I knit and crochet, but haven't done either for years. My last knitting experience was a (to be felted) wool bag that I worked on while recovering from surgery. Knitting in bed with wool yarn and a mild allergy to wool--not a good plan!

  36. Love those fabrics. I can't knit beyond the simple scarf - mom tried to teach me, but I am a lefty and it was too hard. I can crochet up a storm thanks to my Pap who had the patience to teach me at a very young age. As far as colors, well I tend to go for purples! takr26@hotmail.com

    ReplyDelete
  39. I gave up crochet, too hard on the arthritis in my knuckles. I knit, but I knit everything on either circular needles or double points. Rarely, if ever, the "short" single points. Bulky yarn is too hard to work with too. My favorite is fingering weight, mostly neutral colors, but I'm trying to break in to a rainbow. I just finished a shawlette using Malabrigo Silky Merino in a gorgeous raspberry color. Thanks for the chance to win!

  47. I use to knit and would crochet around the knit edge, but I gave all my tools and yarn to my oldest daughter. I just don't think my hands could handle holding the knitting needles any more. But lately, I have seen some pictures of things that have made me wonder if I should give it another try. It is nice to have a hand project to work on while we travel. Nancy: rangerer@sbcglobal.net

  48. I love to crochet! I taught myself when I was pregnant with my first baby 43 years ago! And it's always been my go to when I was between projects or other crafts! Now I always have a crochet project going for car trips longer than 15 minutes - I'm working on baby afghans to donate to our church so I love all the soft and cuddly yarns. Thanks so much for another chance to win. :)
