Planted with Love for Technique Tuesday

I am not much of a gardener. I leave that to my husband. But I love all things flowers and veggies and am always amazed how a seed will turn into something so gorgeous with just a little dirt, sun, water and time. To me, it's a miracle!

First, let's see the fabrics. These are from the Planted with Love Collection.

Oh, wait! Can you see those seed packets (well, fabric seed packets)? Aren't they wonderful? Here is what the panel looks like (before I cut it up).

Seed Packet panel with 20 motifs
Now, let's see how I cut up the rest of the fabric. I used one of my rulers that is like the Tri Recs ruler (I no longer sell them). But if you have a Tri Recs or Half-Rectangle ruler by Creative Grids, this is for you!

Seed Packet Panels ready for stitching
I measured the height and width (7-3/4" x 8-3/4") and did some magic math so I could cut some "tilt" triangles. I went back to my Magic Quilt Vault from 20+ years ago when I first used a Tri-Recs ruler to do this. I cut both small (for the top/bottoms) and large (sides) triangles.

Two sizes of triangles to set the rectangle panels in a "tilt."
First, I used the Allium panel. I put the sides on first. Notice that they are cut a bit oversized.

Long triangles added first
Press triangles and then add the shorter triangles to top and bottom.

Adding shorter triangles
Again, oversized. Now, time to trim.
Pressed; ready to trim to 1/4" seam allowance
Neatly trimmed with 1/4" seam allowance.
Trimmed with a Left tilt
Here is another block trimmed. See how little you are shaving off, but it IS important!

Spinach block ready to be trimmed
The Spinach block also tilts Left.
Spinach block after trimming
Sometimes I make a mistake (what, ME?) All the triangles for each block have to tilt in the same direction. I picked up (and sewed) one with the mirror image of the triangle needed. Time to unstitch and use the correct triangle!
Mistake block
Let's see some that tilt both ways. Ah, now I think you get the picture. Some tilt to the left and some tilt to the right.
4 Seed Packet Blocks
I used 16 of the 20 seed packet motifs and 5 of the bright prints to set them. The border print is directional so I could only use it on the top and bottom borders. I used the gray daisy print for the sides. I call this "What's in My Garden?" Don't you just love it!

What's in My Garden? 40" x 44"

Next week I'll show you what else I made with one of the remaining seed packet panels from the Planted with Love Collection. Take a visit to the Benartex site to see more of the fabrics in this group.
