I have boxes of class samples that I'm slowly going through, deciding which ones can be finished (since I'm retiring some classes).
Royal Star is one of them. I made a yellow Royal Star in 2005 to show students how the blocks look from the wrong side - seams, pressing, sashing. I quilted it on Tuesday and bound it on Wednesday. She waited patiently for 15 years and now look at her shine!
The blocks and sashing units are the same size as my first one made in 2002. It was on the cover of both Quilt Magazine and my first book, Bold, Black and Beautiful Quilts. (New Etsy price of $4.99 for 8 page pdf of
Royal Star with printable pages for the paper pieced corners!)
I have featured this a few times here on my blog and shared some of the steps.
Check out this post to see the paper piecing parts to the blocks. The black quilt was made using Fossil Ferns (by Benartex).
Here are a few other small pieces made with a block or two.

Single Royal Star block (8-1/2" finished) with sashing |
You can see how the sashing blends with the block background so that the star appears to float. A trick of the eye!

Single block with sashings and 9 patch corners |
The center 9 Patch is rotary cut and stitched. The four star points are paper pieced.
I even had a single Royal Star block in my Galaxy of Stars BOM in 2015. This is 12" finished.

12" Royal Star in Galaxy of Stars quilt (2015 BOM) |
You can find the
Royal Star quilt in my Etsy shop. Now I'm looking for a place in my house to hang this new yellow one. I even took the scraps from the backing to make a rod pocket. This is very "stellar" fabric, don't you think?
A perfect match. Hope you enjoyed the show!
Love that backing.
