Wicked Cute

Wicked is usually a word I associate with bad things, people, the devil and other scary and BAD things (I think I said that twice, didn't I?). But my friend Jeannine suggested I add the word "cute" so I could manage this HOP. I'm going to start with a picture of one of my favorite Halloween quilts from previous years and then introduce you to my blog for this posting. I do want to thank Madame Samm and Wendy for coordinating this, with all their hard work and encouragement!
Just a cheap piece of fabric that I bought for $1 a yard at Walmart!
1. I cut 8 squares 9-1/2" x 9-1/2" so that all of them were exactly like this one. Cats as seen, the frog climbing the pumpkin, everything.
2. I put them all in one pile and then sliced the 8 squares along the horizontal, vertical and both diagonals. Now I have 8 piles of triangles.
3. Then I did the same thing with a stack of 4 blue 9-1/2" squares.
4. I added some blue 2-1/2" strips and made pinwheels. Using only one stack of print triangles at a time, I created pinwheel blocks.
5. As you can see, the print captured in each triangle spins around from the center, each block unique. No pattern today (maybe next Halloween), but here is the quilt.
Halloween Pinwheel Quilt (2002) - one of my favorite quilts. The fabric does all the work.
Now for my Wicked (Cute) block. A little background. When my husband and I were newly married (1977), living in Africa, we used to play guitars together after dinner. We would sit on the edge of the bed and croon our tunes. Out of the corner of my eye I caught some movement on the bed and then fear gripped me. A BAT WAS CRAWLING TOWARD US. Yikes! He took care of it and then when we went to the kitchen, we found another one floating in our pan of dishwater. Seems they came down this open vent and were looking for a warm place to settle down. Bats are NOT my favorite creature, but they do have a vital place in our ecosystem. So, my block is a wreath of harmless fabric bats. What do you think?
I made a freezer paper template and cut black bats from fused fabric.

Here is one black bat with garlands of pumpkins and tiny bats.
3 bats scattered on my 12-1/2" background square.
I finger pressed diagonal lines on the background square and then aligned the bats as shown. This bat has appeared in several of my Block a Day Calendars and I re-sized it so it would work with this size square.
Four bats in a circle. Note the beautiful secondary design in the center.
Since it's just a small one square project, I was able to quickly free-motion quilt it. Here it is from the back.
You can see my quilting better from the wrong side.
I took my finished block outside for better photography. I grabbed a few glittery spiders for "mood."
Bat Wreath block with striped binding and a few scary spiders

Bat Wreath block minus the spiders (in case they scared you)

  1. Love your bat quilt and awesome quilting! My favorite place or most economical for patterns would have to be magazines, next would be books. I have to really like a pattern to buy it. Thanks for the giveaway :)

  2. Love your circle of bats - anything that makes a secondary pattern is special to me. My source - hmm not a pattern or book person, it has to be special for that purchase. Block base is my go-to source and natures' color is my palette.

I get more of my quilt patterns from books & I think the books are the best value! Thank you for participating in the blog hop & inspiring me! And thanks for your generous giveaway & a chance to win! I'm following!

My favourite source for pattern...I choose sometimes magazines but I also buy sometimes a single pattern. Books I have, too. ;) I think I have no really favourite... I use all sources ;)

  6. I love your Wickedly Cute pin wheel quilt! The fabric looks fabulous with that pattern! I also occasionally pick up a quilting magazine. It has to have a couple good patterns in it for me to purchase it! Thanks for the giveaway!

  7. Those bats are so wicked! My first source of patterns was from a quilt show in Rockport TX. I took a class in EPP and was hooked. I joined a Guild this year and love how everyone comes together to help out one another. Thanks for sharing your wonderful block. Judith, Texas

  9. Oooh I love your circle of bats - its just perfect. I think I like to buy individual patterns - I am off to a quilt show tomorrow where I will no doubt buy a few even though I have a pile untouched at home already! Thanks for sharing and the chance to win such a fabulous giveaway.

  10. Love your circle of bats, what a great idea - I like the kitty/pumpkin fabric too. As for quilt patterns - I think that books are great value if there are more than one or two things in them to interest you. I buy individual patterns as well though depending on the price. I'm currently enjoying the wide variety of pdf patterns that available - instant gratification, wonderful!

  12. I just love your pinwheel quilt and hope you do have a pattern for it in the future. Also, your bat block makes a great pattern, and I love your quilting. I think books provide the best deal. Often, I only find 1 pattern in a quilt magazine I would actually make. I tend to find several in a book.

  14. I love your 2002 quilt. It is sensational! I also loved your cutesy bats....not so fond of them in real life either! Thank you for the give-away chance. I buy almost all my patterns (well, the bought ones.... I am one of those people that gets most patterns through the freebies on the internet)at my local quilt dealer. She has beautiful patterns. Go look if you don't believe me...http://quilterij.nl/

  16. Hi Happy Halloween I have to say that I love quilt mags and books. Mags because you can get a variety of patterns and then books because you can get more from your favorite designer. I really enjoyed your bat quilt it was different and I think bats are a good display for Halloween. Really would love to win your give a way...thanks.

  23. Beautiful projects! I think quilt books are the best value for patterns, although I also get lots of magazines. Even if I'm not actually making the projects I enjoy just looking through the books and magazines. Love those fall batiks, thanks for the chance to win!

  24. I love to read quilt magazines and quilt books. For me the most economical sources of patterns are the quilt magazines (I have several subscriptions), but I still buy lots of quilts books, and I already have your book "Super Size 'Em." Thanks for the great giveaway.

  25. Favorite source for blocks is Jinny Beyers book on 4000 blocks. It gives directions on how to draft them in any size you need. I have used this book over and over.

Love the bats and I'm hoping the directions for the pinwheel block are forthcoming.

  26. Love your bat block! We had a friend while growing up that we spent the night with. They lived in a 2 story older home with a veranda wrapped all the way around both stories. We used to sleep on that veranda but had to keep our heads covered because bats flew around the outdoor light. We would shriek and scream until her mom would come up and make us come back inside. lol

I like Quilters Cache for free patterns but I would much rather have a book or magazine in front of me. magazines, I pick up at quilt shops so I can see them in person.. and books I buy from various places.

    ReplyDelete
  27. Love the Bat Wreath! I'd have to say magazines, I'm totally addicted to them, although I won't buy the most ridiculously expensive ones. But I also have a ton of individual patterns too. And plenty of books. I *really* should dig in to EQ7!

  28. Love your projects! Your Halloween quilt is scrumptious, and your bat block is wonderful! Thanks for sharing your bat story...funny now, but probably not funny when it happened! I get most of my projects from quilt books....but if I buy a book, it must have several projects I like because the books are so costly! Love your generous giveaways!

  29. Thank you so much for sharing this bat wreath, and the pattern - it's a really cute one and I'm going to make it! The quilt is amazing - I've seen similar but couldn't figure out how they made them. If I had my choice I'd pick quilt books. There are so many projects in a book and I can use it over and over! blessings, marlene

  30. Good Morning Debby..brilliant lay out of bats...pretty cool...source for patterns...mmmmm at the moment, any I can purchase online I buy everywhere lol

    ReplyDelete
  31. LOVE your square - the story kinda would scare the crap outta me to be honest - I'm not a fan of bats in person :)

I'll buy the odd magazine - normally for Christmas time only ones ... My aunt has a library of books that I can borrow when I'm really stuck (so that would be my biggest source of patterns)

I'll buy a special pattern in a kit - so if everything is included - I'll buy it - or else I never really know what to do with a single pattern - and often times it'll sit in a pile someplace ...

    ReplyDelete
  32. I buy and enjoy all of the above, books, mags, and patterns...now if only I had the chance to finish some of them, lol! Love the secondary pattern on that bat wreath and the orange you used just shines...thanks for sharing today :)

  33. Love your Halloween stack-n-whack! Good question about patterns... I purchase plenty of all three. It seems like magazines should be the best value, but in thinking about this, I believe most of the quilts that I have made came from books. That means that for me, magazines and individual patterns are just eye candy!

Patterns: I get inspired a lot by magazins, from all ower. I only made 1 after a pattern and this was from a book,Its my Bali Seastar quilt, othervise I make my own.

  37. I love your Bat Wreath block. If it weren't in Halloween colors, I might not ever see the bats! Very inventive!

I think Quilt Books give you the most bang for your buck - assuming it really fits your style. Magazines are cost-effective , but so hit-or-miss. I also buy individual patterns, but they are generally spur-of-the-moment decisions.

Thanks for the chance to win this great giveaway - I would probably select the calendar, but love the book also!

    ReplyDelete
  38. I like your pinwheel quilt. I get most of my quilt ideas from magazines I think. I have a lot of quilt books but probably only do one from each book. I have a million magazines and I look through them a lot and then choose my patterns.

  39. Thanks for a great post. I love books as a resouce. I enjoy going back to them at different times.

  40. Love the bat pattern and how they make that great secondary pattern! My favorite place for patterns is magazines or individual I find on blogs. Books are not economical unless you want to make many quilts from it. Thanks!

  41. Debby - that bat arrangement is so absolutely cool! You must have a very creative mind. My brain is lax on spacial reasoning abilities, so I have to really work at 'seeing' how things fit together, so I admire those who have that talent. My hope is that by quilting, and challenging this feeble brain of mine, I'm strengthening it to make it last longer, hee hee. I'm a new follower, thanks to the hop!

  42. I love the bat block too.
I love the value in quilt books. You buy the book for a pattern that grabs your imagination and then when you get to pour over the whole book, you find other gems to love too.

  52. Ok, I hate bats, too, but that is adorable! As for my favorite...books, hands down. After 30 years of quilting, I find that too many magazine quilts are just too simple or they're things I've seen over and over. Books tend to concentrate on an idea or technique I want to learn or improve. I'm very excited about the idea of e-books at the moment as I can take my reader anywhere and, well, my bookshelves are pretty full! pbstrand@msn.com

  53. I get most of my inspiration from magazines. I can pick them up and carry them around from place to place as I am planning a new quilt. I usually only subscribe to a mag. for one year. So I have many different styles and ideas to choose from.

    ReplyDelete
  54. I like getting my patterns from books the best. I usually buy the ones where I want to make every single pattern. I like magazines too as there are usually at least 2 things that I want to make and that is cheaper than a single pattern. The magazines have the added bonus of having different designers and small and big projects so that works nicely for me too.
I love your batty wreath. Cute and not scary!

    ReplyDelete
  55. My favorite place for patterns simply because of all the new renditions of old designs, would be magazines. When I need inspiration, I go to the store and pick up a new magazine. I just love the circle of bats!

  61. Great quilt. The bat is great set in a circle, hardly looks like bats that way.

I used to buy books, rarely do anymore. I usually get used magazines from friends to browse through. Mostly I do my own thing now. I may find inspiration from one or more places (blogs, other online sites)and add my own touches.

Those batik fabrics are just gorgeous! Oh I hope I win those, lol.

  75. I love that bat pattern. I love quilting books. I can take them to bed with me and drool over all the neat patterns and ideas. Then i can pick one and have it in front of me to follow to some extent.

    ReplyDelete
  76. That bat pattern has me stopping other things - must do immediately.
Most of my quilts start with a picture in a magazine

    ReplyDelete
  77. Quilt books. I have quite a shelf full going so far. Although I have to say blogs is a close second to that! Bloggers take the time to show you how to put the blocks together, and that is a great help to me.

    ReplyDelete
  78. I love that quilt. . . Must try that method 4 a pinwheel right away!
I also really like that secondary design in the bat wreath.

I have to say that lately my best inspiration has come from the blogs that I've been following!
These are blogs I follow on a daily basis b/c I like the work of the authors.
Generally you get way more views of the projects, you can zoom in 4 a closer look, and a lot of times
you get to see several different color schemes or how the pattern is interpretted by more than just one person.
Following these blogs seems more personal than a book, magazines, or an individual pattern; but low and behold,
    I use all of them!

One of my favorite books is Modern Blocks, compiled by Suzanne Woods. Each of the 99 blocks is great and could be used repeatedly in a quilt, combined with other blocks or blown up to make a quilt out of one Large quilt block.

  83. Love your bat wreath. I have cut way back on magazines and usually only buy Quiltmania, Australian P&Q and American P&Q. I think books are probably the best value for the $$$s,and provide lots of inspiration. But I usually end up changing the patterns a bit anyway.

  88. Your batty circle is fabulous! I am a new quilter -- actually a new piece-er, as I haven't actually quilted any of my (growing stack of) projects yet. I've used kits, magazines, and an individual pattern, and made one of my own. So far, using inspiration to make my own has been the most fun, but the individual patterns - directly from websites of designers - have been the most successful!

  94. Best source of quilt inspiration? I think quilting magazines edge out quilting books by just a bit for me. I especially like the feature in some magazines that show different colorways in a pattern. Now, I am so intrigued by the pinwheel quilt...I have to try it! And the bat pattern...love it and will add it to my growing pile of ideas for a whimsical autumnal quilt!

Thanks sew much for hosting a stop on the hop and a give away as well ....love these calendars.

  107. I get my patterns from all over, but I suppose the quilts I actually make are from patterns I buy individually. I do think magazine are the best valve. Such a good question. 112. I love your bat wreath!!! I am a pattern kind of gal and I love to pass them on once I have made them...magazines are a close second...I own a ton of books but in recent years I have to realllllly love a book to buy it! I am sooooo making that bat wreath out of wool!

  113. Love your bats and thanks for the pattern. Your give aways are awesome, I would really like to win something. I have several older books which I use as basic patterns and tweak them whenever I can. Debbie Mumm has awesome patterns. Thanks for sharing. I am also going to become a follower.

  114. Your quilt is wonderful and the little bat wall hanging is just cute! I love books for inspiration.

  115. I love the way the Bats don't really look like Bats in the wreath. M6y favorite is getting the Quilt Patterns from a magazine and I've subscribed to a bunch so I can pick a few out. I enjoy looking at the Blocks on your Yearly calendars too! That is what I would choose if I win!

  116. I love your bat wreath and the quilting on it! If there are a few quilts I would like to make in a book, then I will buy the book. I also have single patterns that I've purchased. I don't buy as many magazines as I used to but I still buy them sometimes. I would say that books give me the best value.

  117. I used to use magazines but now I like books and little cheaper patterns like Schnibbles....but books are probably the best blue! Your quilt was creative! Love it...great giveaway, not sure what I would choose! Thanks....

  119. Your bat block is a perfect Halloween piece.
I don't know which source is the best value but I manage to collect patterns from all three places.
Thanks for letting us participate in the give away

  120. Your circle of bats block really caught my eye; love the secondary pattern. I tend to buy single patterns. Thanks for sharing and for the chance at your giveaway. I am a new follower.

  122. Thanks for the lovely giveaway. I too like your bat blocks.
For me, books are the best value for the money, followed by magazines, and then single patterns. Though, if must choose in a giveaway, fabric usually wins out!

  123. I will be using those bats! Wicked! I refer back to my library often, but if I am looking for something fresh and am not getting inspiration from my books I go to magazines...on the rare occassion that I happen across a pattern that just screams to me I get it. Barbie in NC, follower

  124. Didn't that bat block turn out just the cutest! So wicked that there was that secondary pattern. Your FM really made it pop! I'm fairly new to quilting but think mostly I see a quilt on my internet/blog travels and go from there to get the pattern. Thanks for the wicked giveaway. :)

  125. I adore the bats in the circles! Fabulous! Most of my quilting idea have originated on Pinterest lately. I love the pins to their source and find if it is a book, single pattern, or whatever. I also like etsy. Thanks for sharing!

  126. My favorite source for patterns is a magazine, followed by books. I loved your pinwheel quilt. We have had bats in another house and its a wee bit scary. Thanks for sharing.

  127. I absolutely love what you have done with bats! I think I might have to make a little wall hanging as I don't have too many Halloween decorations.
I like getting patterns and ideas from magazines.
PS: If I should be lucky enough to win a prize I would prefer the fabric. Many thanks!

  128. Debbie, your pinwheel quilt is BOOtiful and your bat block cute...it would make an awesome candle mat. Best value would probably be magazines, but I sure do buy my share of books and individual patterns. Thanks for the inspiration and sharing in the fun and wicked hop.

  129. Wow...that quilt is just wonderful. I also love the secondary design that the bats give that block. Great job.

I find most of my inspiration comes from my quilting magazines.

  130. The bat wreath block is great, I love the pattern of the negative space in the middle.

I am fairly new to quilting so I don't have a wide variety of resources. I do have one quilt pattern book that I've started one project from, and a handful of pdf patterns I have purchased from Etsy.

    ReplyDelete
  131. I look at magazines and use them for a jumping off point. Then I read books to find the great technical details and ideas about borders and setting that may not be in the magazines.

    ReplyDelete
  132. ooh! I love the bats! I can see that hanging on my wall year-round :-)

I get the most from books. It's rare that I'll buy a book that has fewer than three patterns I want to make (that's a discipline thing for me!). The thing is, I rarely make quilts from books but most often look to them for inspiration.

And then I go off and design something and do it the most difficult way possible. LOL

    ReplyDelete
  133. Your circle bats are neat! I usually get 'ideas' from books, magazines, and quilting blogs!! Thanks!

    ReplyDelete
  134. thanks for the Howlingly-cute array of eye candy! the Wreath of Bats is an amazing pattern--I cracked up when I read "note the secondary design"--as if I could miss it! It's difficult to find a pattern where the secondary is as gorgeous as the primary. love it!
Okay, so I think I like books best, and usually by one author because I if I like one design, then I typically like all the designs by that author. I have a lot of magazine subscriptions but rarely use those patterns--they're more "inspirational."

  135. Love the kaliedascope quilt. Your bats in a circle does make the most interesting pattern. I am a "backwards" quilter. I get fabric first, then look for a pattern. Lots of ideas from blogs, also books and magazines. One day I might do it the "right" way. Maybe.

    ReplyDelete
  136. I love your circle of bats! I have a go-to book for block patterns, but I find myself buying more individual patterns lately. Thanks for sharing with us all, and for the chance to win.

    ReplyDelete
  137. I've been buying your calendar for years and I don't know why I didn't put two and two together. LOL. Anyway I get ideas from everywhere so it is impossible to pick just one. Magazines, books, blogs, they all have more ideas than I will ever have time to make myself.

    ReplyDelete
  138. Quilt magazines, I am learning to read the patterns so its great if a blogger has been published and has a tutorial or I love the hops like Zakka and fixing to do one called IMPROV, it has a book and hop, so I am learning and winning prizes, its rewarding and the support is unlimited.

  143. That pinwheel quilt is beautifull and your bats are great !!! We have a bat block hanging under the roof of our house :-)
My source will be the magazine Quiltmania, I just love that one !!
And which one is the best value for your money? I think it will be the magazines. Thanks for this wonderful give away.

  144. Your blocks are Wicked cute, Debby! You are just so creative. Thanks for the inspiration.

Tough question. It depends... usually it's books for me, but I do find lots of inspiration in magazines.

  145. Your bats are the only bats I would consider inviting into my house. I am a follower of your blog. My favorite source for patterns is magazines followed closely by single patterns.

    ReplyDelete
  146. I like your adorable bat pattern. I am a follower of your blog. Most of my patterns come from magazines, followed closely by individual patterns.

  147. Wonderful bats! And wonderful bat story! My favorite source would be books, I guess. Usually, a magazine has such varied things inside, that I might just like one of the projects. But with a book, if I like one of the projects, I usually like most or all of them, so it is a better value for me. But either way, I rarely follow a pattern, I use them for inspiration, but am terribly about following rules or making something exactly the way someone else has made it.

    ReplyDelete
  148. Wow, love those bats! They look great in a circle. Thanks for sharing.

    ReplyDelete
  149. I have always loved your work since you published in Quilt magazine. I tend to buy more magazines for their patterns, fewer individual patterns, and sometimes books if they have enough of what I'm looking for to justify the price. To me, magazines are the most economically reasonable.

    ReplyDelete
  150. Thanks for showing your unique blocks. Can I copy your bats?
I like to get patterns online of course, but also look through magazines for patterns....best bang for the buck......I have used some of your daily calendar ideas.

  151. I've just recently returned to quilting after a long hiatus. My favorite book is Carol Doak's Easy Machine Paper Piecing which I bought in 1995. I learned how to paper piece from that book. The book is now 15 years old (oh my, where did the time go) and is a tad tattered now.

    You're quilts are beautiful.

  152. Love your bat block! So very cool! I think magazines are the best bang for your buck. Quilting books are good too, if I like the majority of the patterns. :) I'm already a follower too! :)

  153. Individual patterns. I like the bats!

    ReplyDelete
  154. Oh my goodness -- your batty block is incredibly clever!! It's funny -- the individual bat was definitely a bat -- but put together as he was and it's a very regal, ornamental iron-ish looking block -- very New Orleans, French Quarter looking and stylish. *Love*!! I rarely use a pattern straight out of the books or magazines. I use them for ideas. I suppose I'd have to say--for following the pattern explicitly--individual patterns. Though I don't really use those much either! I'm more a fly-by-the-seat-of-my-pants kind of quilter. I have ideas in my head and I put them into EQ and go from there! :)

  155. Congratulations on your new grandson! Hope mother and baby are doing well!

  156. I love the bat wreath. I almost didn't click on it because---eww bats!
I like books for patterns. They come in easy, intermediate and intricate.
When I first thought of quilting, I got a magazine with a gorgouse(sp?) sunburst design. I have yet to make anything that hard. Little by little I learned on my own to search out beginner patterns. I had no idea what a walking foot was, and my quilts all had puckers here and there. I moved to the St Louis area, and joined a quilt group to get to know some ladies my age (mature to say the least.) I leaned sooo much from my friends.

  157. I love your bats. I like to search blogs to hey patterns. They are unique.
