Animal Week: Day 8 and FREE pattern

Image
Yes, I have more animal quilts. They are a very popular motif on fabrics. Here is a wonderful 100% cotton decorator sample that has beautiful wildlife scattered on it. I have two color-ways. These will back some upcoming quilts. But can you believe that price?! Such lovely forest animals. Decorator fabric from 2008. 35" square. $55 a yard!! Here it is in red: Red forest animal print Here is a little quilt with forest animals - in fact, the collection is called Forest Parade by Windham. I featured this a few years ago. It is a pattern I've made a few times and still plan on using it again. You can read about this and see several of the steps here: Forest Buddies . And you can find the link for the FREE pattern I designed (with other fabrics) there, too! Forest Parade Quilt : 40" x 40" I pulled out the leftovers from the quilt and made some more blocks the other day. I really squeezed the life out of them, but I managed to get 16 blocks, 9" x 9". Will find a

More days, more animals. Let's go from the air to the sea. Yes, I'll get to those that roam the earth, but I've got some fish and even crabs! I used some EPP to make those hearts and a crab I designed about 15 years ago for a project for Blank Textiles. Crab Happy Quilt And some recent fish that I made using a VERY old pattern. Here's the old pattern made up into placemats 25 years ago! Fishy placemats published in Quilt Magazine Here are the two fish made up using some Kaffe Fassett fabrics. I sell these easy patterns in my Etsy store. Algernon the Angel Fish in 12" size (pattern also includes the 6" size) And one in blue: Algernon the Angel Fish  in 12" size (pattern also includes the 6" size) Heres my pattern as seen in my Quilter's Block a Day Calendar . This is a wonderful panel from P and B Textiles (2017). Collection is called "Wild Things" and I'll be sharing more from that later. But the pattern is FREE and you can get it

Animal Week: Day Six

OK. I'm going into another week, but I have more animals in quilts to share. Who keeps track of time, anyway, in this Covid-crazy life? I found more birds. First, a rooster. This is a panel from a long ago fabric collection by Windham. Blue rooster panel Why did I tilt him? Well, because I could! The triangle is a half-rectangle which you can get with those Tri-Recs rulers. I have one set left in my Etsy store . Here is the wall banner I made with some of the others. I gave it to a teaching friend who has a quilt shop in New Jersey call The Blue Hen. And we know how hens feel about roosters! I still have a few of these panels left. Will be fun to share them with my granddaughter who is interested in sewing (she's 7). Here are some chickens that I made into an egg apron for my daughter's friend who has chickens! She loved it. Then I pulled out some decorator fabric pieces I got several years ago from a local shop. What do you think of this? It is 100% cotton and is about 35&

Just a few more butterflies to finish up this week. Then I'll move on to fish and elephants and circus animals - and more! This butterfly quilt was made using my Cookie Cutter technique. This is raw edge appliqué and is constructed in half blocks. I made this almost 20 years ago using an Ana Griffin collection. Romantic Butterflies : 38" x 40" Then I have log cabin blocks that have morphed into butterflies. I used the Curvy Log Cabin ruler by Jean Ann Wright to make these. The blocks are 6" square. Three log cabin blocks plus a plain square morph into a butterfly. I loved making this quilt and I even made 18 more blocks that are sitting here, waiting for someone to buy them! Here's a single block. Single Butterfly block: 12" x 12"  Here's the quilt I made. Sunshine Butterflies. 47" x 47" And one made in brighter colors: Sunshine Butterflies by the Quilting Divas Sewing Boutique And, if you love the blocks and don't want to piece them,

Animal Week: Day Four

Time for butterflies! You've seen many of these before. Who doesn't love the beauty and grace of a butterfly in flight?! Here's a recent one I made from a vintage butterfly pattern. I've made it several times. First the blocks, which I made in 2016. I used some browns from my Kaffe Fassett collection. Four Butterfly blocks: 10" x 10" Then I finally put them into a quilt and quilted it last year. I call it "Taking Flight." Taking Flight : 40" x 40" I also made it a few years ago and donated it to a local children's charity: Four more butterflies ! And a single butterfly up close: And one more using this butterfly appliqué pattern. This was made with the Painted Wings Collection by Windham Fabrics. Also donated to a local children's charity. Four butterfly blocks in happy colors! I used butterflies in this next quilt I designed for Windham Fabrics and sold as a kit in the Keepsake Quilting Catalog. I call it Audrey's Garden (my ol

More birds, and I'l try to finish with them today. But, I keep finding more in my Quilt Vault! These two sassy birds are from the Garden Bouquet vintage set of blocks. They appear in every single flower block - all 25 of them! I redrafted these 20 years ago from the 1930s designs of Florence LaGanke. My blocks are 12" x 12" and this small quilt is 34" x 34". Five Block Garden Bouquet quilt : 34" x 34"  These two birds were given names! They are Saucy Bird and Meek Bird! I took the original urn pattern that composed of templates and turned them into a single piece of appliqué. Very easy, indeed! The rest of the images (flowers, birds) are also raw edge appliqué. Here is a vintage quilt top from the 1930s. What do you think? Very lavender! The anonymous maker kept one bird yellow and the other blue. Vintage Garden Bouquet owned by Sue Reich of Massachusetts Here's a completed quilt done in pink! And one photographed for Quilt Magazine many years ag

More birds today. Let's see some vintage quilt patterns from the 1930s. This first small quilt uses the Florida Jay from the pattern set called The Laurel Wreath . I made 5 of these blocks (with different birds in the center) and then pooped out! Those wreaths have 25 leaves to appliqué! Florida Jay 12" block  Here's a digital rendition of the Laurel Wreath quilt . Birds and Flowers are featured inside those amazing wreaths. Yes, I drew every single one of those birds and leaves and flowers about 20 years ago. They are from 1931 and were designed by Nancy Page for the Kansas City Star. The Laurel Wreath quilt : 90" x 104" with scalloped borders Here is a REAL vintage quilt that includes all the blocks. Isn't it gorgeous?! Laurel Wreath with a Greek column looking border Here are the other 4 birds I stitched and then put into a quilt. Like I said, after making these I swore off making the blocks with flowers! Blocks are 12" x 12". My pattern for this

Animal Week: Day One (and FREE pattern)

I'm not kidding! Animals in quilts are so much fun! I'm going to share about birds (lots of them), cows, butterflies, elephants, fish, and even crabs! Oh, and yes - cats! (I'm going to check my quilt vaults to see if I have any dogs.) I found the dogs. Then I found wolves, an elephant, fox, and monkeys! I'm going to begin with birds, because it's going to take me more than one day to show them. I have a LOT of bird quilts. The first quilt uses some panels from Home Grown by Benartex. I upsized a few of my birdhouse pattern s to work with the 10" panels. This still hangs in my kitchen. Birds and Bees at home I made Pecking Order about 7 years ago working with a Windham Fabrics collection called Collage. I quilted this myself. I designed it based on those little birds in the bottom fabric and an upsized birdhouse standing on the roof. You gotta agree: this certainly looks like a bossy bird! Pecking Order Here's a version of the same quilt that
