Jewels - Old and New
Well, I don't have any real ones to speak of. My wedding band has a few chips. I didn't get an engagement ring (my call). But I have FABRIC jewels and they are lovely!
This is my Scrappy Diamonds to Jewels quilt which was a workshop for a few years.

Scrappy Diamonds to Jewels: 48" x 52" |
Here is one I made almost 30 years ago where I incorporated some vintage crochet flowers and an awesome basket into the quilt. This now lives with my oldest daughter who loves things like this.
Jewels begin as diamonds. You don't need templates. They are easy to cut using your standard ruler with 60 degree lines - any size. These were cut 4-1/2" from flat side to flat side.
Taking the tip off one end (there is a formula for this!)

Removing small triangle to make the diamond a jewel |
Then, I added some Kona Snow triangles to two short sides of each jewel and joined them in sets of 6.
Of course, no y-seams! Let me show you one of the blocks which takes the mystery out of the whole thing.

Scrappy Jewels block |
I've made various blocks using English Paper Piecing (which I shared here before). The next photo is a smaller quilt made in 2016 using a novelty collection. Can you see how two jewels of the same fabric create a heart?! I wish I had carried out that theme to the outside diamonds. This has since been donated to a local children's charity.

Now, I feel quite rich today. I actually gave away the quilt at the top of this page and our dear friends thought they won the lottery. Isn't that how it's supposed to be with quilts?!
I take it the little side triangles are the size of the triangle you cut off the bottom of the diamond pieces. That last block/quilt is very busy. Kind of like an I spy quilt. Depending on how I look at it I am seeing 3D images. I didn't see the hearts at first I was focused on the 3D looking blocks.
ReplyDeleteThey are not the same size. They differ by 1/2". I love math!
DeleteSo pretty! I'm curious, can you give us the formula for taking the triangle tip off?
ReplyDeleteThe info is in my pattern. They are 2 different sized triangles. It's all in the math! But you can see in the photo above that the cutaway triangle uses the 2" mark on my ruler.
DeleteI love this Debby. I think I would like to try making these especially scrappy ones. I had to look really hard to find the hearts. What I saw was "Baby Blocks" but I finally did find them. All of the designs are beautiful.
