It's Wednesday and I made more of those
New Colonies blocks. Remember the collection from last week?
And remember the block I showed sewn all by machine?
Well, how did I cut those hexagons using my Spiderweb/60 degree ruler? This is part of a future pattern series, so I won't be spelling everything out. Just showing the basics.
Fold strip in half along length. Align any 60 degree ruler along horizontal line that corresponds with cut strip minus 1/4". Cut along both sides of the ruler. (BTW, my name is on that ruler for when I teach this class and there are 20 rulers that all look alike!)

Now, here is where I need your help. I can't decide how to arrange them. I will be stitching them to a white on white background fabric. I have pinned them up on my design wall in two arrangements. The lighting in my studio is not good for photography, so ignore that part. Just let me know which arrangement you think is more pleasant to you. If you want to say why, that's even better!

What's the giveaway and how do you qualify?

Hi!!! I prefer the scattered version!! But also wonder if they will fit together up and down also? Looks like they would!!! I always prefer scattering than straight lines!!! Probably cause I can't draw a straight line!!! It is very pretty either way!!!
ReplyDeleteAt first glance, I liked the scattered arrangement because it looks more natural, like flowers would be in a real garden. But I also like that there is more white space showing in #2 and it make a nice secondary pattern. That's not very decisive, is it?

I love version 2 because the space between the flowers forms a secondary pattern that is so pleasing to my eye. I would love to win your giveaway.

I would do the first version it has variety and not your typical arrangement.It looks good.
ReplyDeleteHere is my thoughts: It depends on if you want a more modern look to it or traditional. I think #1 would be great for a more modern look they would be scattered and the feel of floating. Step 2 I think is more traditional and you would also get more than 1 design affect to it. Either way I think with your fabric choices it will be gorgeous. Happy Thanksgiving.
ReplyDeleteI want to like your scattered arrangement better, but I think with your strong blocks and the super contrast with the patterned white background, Standard looks better. The negative space really becomes a new pattern that enhances rather than competes.
ReplyDeleteHowever, if you went for a different color background, say a sapphire blue, for example, it would create a ribbon of sky behind the scattered flowers and be very dynamic in another way!
The scattered version #1 definitely. I don't care for symmetry anymore.
ReplyDeleteDebby, I like the scattered design, it really draws the eye in to see what is where and ?how did she do that? effect. Everyone can lay flowers out in neat straight rows but I never plant mine that way in the yard, do you? Either way they are gorgeous and will work. The ruler rocks Debby, been wanting one forever. And 2 patterns, I'm in. :)

ReplyDeleteI like the scattered because it has a more organic flow to it, like something you would see in nature and it seems easier on my eyes. ReplyDeleteI like the second, organized look. I like to acknowledge the "forest" but look at the individual "trees" one at a time. The scattered arrangement has charm--but it is a little busy to me because I can't enjoy the different prints without being distracted.

I like the scattered version myself. The flowers are wonderful so they will look nice either way on the solid background.
ReplyDeleteI like #1 if the blocks will be staggered evenly as it looks in the picture. It has order and movement at the same time. #2 is kinda ho-hum, IMHO.

Neat ruler. This is one I do not have. I think I like your Option#1. I like it because the flowers are closer together as opposed to the flowers being side by side each other. I'm not sure if this is a good reason, hehe, I just like the flowers closer together.
