It's Wednesday and I made more of those
New Colonies blocks. Remember the collection from last week?
And remember the block I showed sewn all by machine?
Well, how did I cut those hexagons using my Spiderweb/60 degree ruler? This is part of a future pattern series, so I won't be spelling everything out. Just showing the basics.
Fold strip in half along length. Align any 60 degree ruler along horizontal line that corresponds with cut strip minus 1/4". Cut along both sides of the ruler. (BTW, my name is on that ruler for when I teach this class and there are 20 rulers that all look alike!)
Well, how many did I make? (You can see my process in last week's post:
New Colonies.)

16 Grandmother's Flower Garden blocks - all by machine! |
Now, here is where I need your help. I can't decide how to arrange them. I will be stitching them to a white on white background fabric. I have pinned them up on my design wall in two arrangements. The lighting in my studio is not good for photography, so ignore that part. Just let me know which arrangement you think is more pleasant to you. If you want to say why, that's even better!

Assembly #1 - Like scattered flowers |
|
Assembly #2 - Typical GFG arrangement |
What's the giveaway and how do you qualify?
1. I am giving away my Spiderweb ruler (as shown above) which comes with patterns for two spiderweb quilts. It is a multi-use ruler that will cut units up to 6-1/2" (for blocks up to 12" finished). (I sell it for $13.)
2. Just leave a comment telling me what YOU think. Just your opinion. Even if I don't choose your arrangement later when I sew these together, I just want to hear from you (I need help!)
3. If you are a no-reply blogger, I have absolutely NO WAY to contact you and you forfeit your chance to win a prize. If you're fine with that, I still would like to have your comments!
Contest ends Friday, November 23 at midnight (EST in the USA).
Here are the pictures of the patterns included:

Spiderweb pattern #1 that comes with the ruler |

Spiderweb pattern #2 using 2-1/2" strips (perfect for those Jelly Rolls) |
Hi!!! I prefer the scattered version!! But also wonder if they will fit together up and down also? Looks like they would!!! I always prefer scattering than straight lines!!! Probably cause I can't draw a straight line!!! It is very pretty either way!!!
ReplyDeleteAt first glance, I liked the scattered arrangement because it looks more natural, like flowers would be in a real garden. But I also like that there is more white space showing in #2 and it make a nice secondary pattern. That's not very decisive, is it?
ReplyDeleteI like the scattered arrangement best. I think it has more movement.
ReplyDeleteBoth arrangements look nice but I like the typical GFG the best. Thanks for the chance to win.

I love version 2 because the space between the flowers forms a secondary pattern that is so pleasing to my eye. I would love to win your giveaway.
ReplyDeleteI like #2 - the Typical GFG arrangement - I think it would be better for the quilting - you could do a nice little motif in the white spaces.
ReplyDeleteI like the scattered arrangement. I think it looks like flowers in the wind and .
ReplyDeleteI prefer #1 the scattered arrangement - making them look like they're falling down the quilt would be interesting. Thanks for the giveaway.
ReplyDeleteI prefer #1 too, because I love the charme it has, like in nature. Probably I am more a "wild" person, lol!
ReplyDeleteI like #1, it looks like a daisy chain to me, makes me think of when I used to tie flowers together to put around my girls heads!
ReplyDeletelisamcgriff(at)hotmail(dot)com
I would do the first version it has variety and not your typical arrangement. It looks good.
ReplyDeleteHere is my thoughts: It depends on if you want a more modern look to it or traditional. I think #1 would be great for a more modern look they would be scattered and the feel of floating. Step 2 I think is more traditional and you would also get more than 1 design affect to it. Either way I think with your fabric choices it will be gorgeous. Happy Thanksgiving.
ReplyDeleteI want to like your scattered arrangement better, but I think with your strong blocks and the super contrast with the patterned white background, Standard looks better. The negative space really becomes a new pattern that enhances rather than competes.
ReplyDeleteHowever, if you went for a different color background, say a sapphire blue, for example, it would create a ribbon of sky behind the scattered flowers and be very dynamic in another way!
The scattered version #1 definitely. I don't care for symmetry anymore.
ReplyDeleteDebby, I like the scattered design, it really draws the eye in to see what is where and ?how did she do that? effect. Everyone can lay flowers out in neat straight rows but I never plant mine that way in the yard, do you? Either way they are gorgeous and will work. The ruler rocks Debby, been wanting one forever. And 2 patterns, I'm in. :)
ReplyDeleteI like the scattered version better! Symmetry is nice, but random is beautiful. :)
ReplyDeleteThanks for showing the basics! I like #1 the best. Thanks for the chance to win!
ReplyDeleteScattered I like best but but it would mean odd shaped bits that you have to add in which would be harder. Traditional works too ;) Thanks for the chance!
ReplyDeleteI like view #1 with the scattered arrangement... I would love to win the template as I have a quilt I want to make and I need a large hexagon... I also like the patterns that come with the template. thanks for the giveaway
ReplyDeleteI like the scattered option.
ReplyDeleteI like #1...The scattered flowers give the traditional quilt block a modern flair on. =)
ReplyDeleteAssembly #2, I like the symmetry and order.
ReplyDeleteYasmin
I like Assembly #1 something different as I did with my quilt called Not your Grandmas Flower garden. On my blog http://runtomomma.blogspot.com/
ReplyDeleteI liked the scattered version. Both look good, but the scattered version just catches the eye better and looked more like a garden.
ReplyDeleteI like the scattered arrangement but sadly I'm not sure why!! just go for it!
ReplyDeleteI like the scattered because it has a more organic flow to it, like something you would see in nature and it seems easier on my eyes. The other set seems harder and more rigid when I look at it. (pbstrand@msn.com) (Both, of course, are lovely, but you did ask for an opinion and my family will tell you I ALWAYS have an opinion!)
ReplyDeletescattered...
ReplyDeleteI like the look of the scattered.
ReplyDeleteI prefer the scattered look. It is more unusual.
ReplyDeleteI like the second, organized look. I like to acknowledge the "forest" but look at the individual "trees" one at a time. The scattered arrangement has charm--but it is a little busy to me because I can't enjoy the different prints without being distracted.
ReplyDeleteI'm not so sure that asking us will help you but I like the scattered version, it's interesting and less militant.
ReplyDeleteEither way you choose, you know it's going to be lovely!
Thank you for the chance :)
I like the scattered version myself. The flowers are wonderful so they will look nice either way on the solid background.
ReplyDeleteI like #1 if the blocks will be staggered evenly as it looks in the picture. It has order and movement at the same time. #2 is kinda ho-hum, IMHO.
ReplyDeleteI like the scattered arrangement the best. Just better eye appeal, imo
ReplyDeleteGood Morning! I prefer the Scattered Flower Pattern. A Happy Thanksgiving to you, your family and all your followers!
ReplyDeleteI really like the scattered arrangement best. It seems more appealing.
ReplyDeleteI really like them both but I prefer the second one. I think it has the traditional look to it that matches the wonderful fabrics that you are using.

Hi Debbie
ReplyDeleteI like the scattered arrangement, but i would scatter them a bit more leaving some background showing around each flower - or else I would sew them all together like a hand sewn hexie quilt without any background showing. Thanks for the opportunity on the draw
bonnielarson58@gmail.com.
I like them both. but I really like #2 because of the layout with in the hexies, it seems to bring life in a very differnt fashio. thanks for a chance to win. oh i personally do like the background because it makes the hexies pop
ReplyDeleteI like number 2 because of the secondary patterns which are created. Love the fabric.
ReplyDeleteScattered. Adds an interesting design detail..something different from what is expected. Your ruler looks like a great tool...love the spiderweb pattern!
ReplyDeleteI really like the scattered look. But whatever you decide will look great like always. Thank you for the chance to win.
ReplyDeleteI like the scattered flowers arrangement best.
ReplyDeleteI like pattern #2, it is so colorful and appealing.
ReplyDeleteI like the first one as it is different:) Less structured:)
ReplyDeleteLove the fabric choices too!!!!
I like the scattered flowers(#1) It just is more appealing to me.
ReplyDeleteI like the scattered version. It gives the quilt some movement. :)
ReplyDeleteThe scattered arrangement looks nice. My friend has that ruler. I will have to try those.
ReplyDeleteI like the scattered look because it is more life flowers growing in the garden. Beautiful blocks and fabric!
ReplyDeleteHi! I like the scattered version best, I'm not one for everything lined up in neat rows. Thank you for the chance to win your great giveaway, I don't have anything like that ruler and it would come in very handy for me.
ReplyDeletethelady(at)hotmail(dot)com
Neat ruler. This is one I do not have. I think I like your Option#1. I like it because the flowers are closer together as opposed to the flowers being side by side each other. I'm not sure if this is a good reason, hehe, I just like the flowers closer together.
ReplyDeleteThank you for a great giveaway and a chance to win.
usairdoll(at)gmail(dot)com
i like 2# i would love to win that ruler thanks
ReplyDeleteI like #2 because of the prominent secondary pattern formed. I like the scattered flowers but not the way my eyes travel through the white spaces.
ReplyDeleteI like #1, scattered. Just like the random look of it better, I'm not such a straight n narrow quilter!
ReplyDeleteHappy T-Day if you partake. Ani
I like the scattered version. I think it has more energy. Thanks for asking our opinion--quilters like to chime in right?
ReplyDeleteYou don't make it easy. But I like the scattered version better. I think it is because of the colors.
ReplyDeleteI liked the scattered version. I love the ruler! Thanks for the chance to win :)
ReplyDeleteI like #1, the scattered flowers version.
ReplyDeletepnconverse(at)hotmail(dot)com
I am probably too late to enter, but want to say I think your ruler looks like fun and your spiderweb quilts are beautiful. Possibilities look endless.
ReplyDeleteI'm a bit partial to scrappy quilts, but even with a plan they look great with your ruler tool.
