Yes, I lived through the 1960s (junior and high school years - please don't do the math). Today we revisit the 1960s and what I remember, living in California at the time, is FLOWER POWER.
(Click

But, first some pics of me in the 1960s. Notice this first one; I kept the date on it so it would be believable. LOOK AT THAT CAR IN THE BACKGROUND ON MY STREET!!!
|
In 1965 I was 13 years old, living in San Jose, California. SEE THAT CAR?!! |
How about Christmas morning? I'm with Kathy on the left (about 6 years old) and Janet on the right (about 11 years old). Get a load of those rollers! No wonder my dad spent most of his time out in the garage (4 daughters and a wife).
|
I don't think it did a lot of good, but a girl has to try! |
How did those curlers work out? (Me, a few years later - did I really have that much hair?)
Oh, and did I say that my mom was an Avon lady who sold makeup door to door?
|
There was a LOT of teasing going on with that hair; and lots of eye makeup |
|
And then an Easter morning with Janet (1 year younger than me; no wonder my mom floated in and out of sanity all those years . . .)
|
Janet and me, high school. Mom, in her 40s and losing the victory |
|
Flower Power (Lazy Daisies fabric from 2007) |
I remembered this awesome panel I bought in 2007, but I couldn't find it in my stash. It has a deep, solid black background. Where was it? Can anyone say, "Clean up time?"
This collection was a wildly popular line from Lakehouse Fabrics. There were fabrics that also had light blue and green for the flower backgrounds. First I cut them up as appliques.
My Happy Quilt which is on the cover of my 2014 wall calendar of quilts
|
I cut out those appliques for bold flowers. |
Here they are both cut up and then scattered over the four corners.
|
I cut my panels up in a different way |
Yes, she became another cover girl (1 of 27 covers!)
|
I gifted this quilt to a friend when her mom died. Lasts longer than cut flowers! |
So, with my newly re-discovered flowers with the black backgrounds, I was on a quest to combine some of the elements of both quilts. And, of course, I grabbed some bright batiks!
I started with my cut-out panels:
|
Two of the four colors of flowers |
I thought I would cut up the panels into four triangles.
|
Yes, I did. I cut these into fourths. I cut SEVERAL panels this way |
|
I sewed them together with other colors. Sliced them before adding outside batik strips. . . |
|
I added 2 rows of batiks, but just wasn't exciting enough. Lonely block, now a UFO |
I abandoned this idea and went with another plan, but still intent on using those lush flowers as the center. Now it's time for the BATIKS!
|
Got out my trusty melon template (from my EZ Double Wedding Ring set) |
Fusible on wrong side of batiks. Cut out 8 of each color . . .
|
Aren't these beautiful batiks? From Sew Batik |
|
This is the second color |
I had some black batik with little etchings of white. I trimmed down my orange flower, added the black batik to all four sides and then used these melons as flower petals. I call this Flower Power. What do you think?
|
Power to the flowers! |
|
20" x 20", just resting on a quilted throw pillow |
Then I realized on Tuesday that there was nothing TWISTED in my project. Sure, those petals turned but no twisting was going on. So, I pulled out my TWISTED HEXAGON pattern and using the same center, some new batiks, and I got this:
|
Twisted Hexagon block with an 8" center (a very large 16" block) |
Then I made a mistake cutting out the rest of the half-hexagons and had to tweak a lot of things, but I still was able to make this Twisted Hexagon table runner (needs a border; have to go shopping!).
The black and white fabric is also a batik
|
Three large blocks make for a very long table runner |
So, now I've twisted with the 60s, with batiks, and you got a few pics of yours truly almost 50 years ago!
Giveaway: A jelly roll (2-1/2" strips) of 20 batik fabrics from my stash. Contest is over October 3 at midnight.
|
Twenty 2-1/2" strips of batiks |
What do you have to do? Leave a comment telling me what you remember about the 1960s. If you weren't born then, tell me what you've HEARD about the 60s! Doesn't have to be long.
NOW it's time to thank our Madame Samm of

Love your table runner, sew bright and cheerful! Guess I must be older then dirt as I was married in 1963, LOL! I had lived in San Francisco, but the hippy stage didn't hit me! Thank you for sharing.
ReplyDeleteLoved the first half of the 60s, hated the second. Fifty years ago, I was a senior in HS ...ouch! BTW, that car in your picture surely must have been someone's antique because it isn't from the 50s or 60s. Looks more like something from a WWII movie.
ReplyDeleteI've enjoyed making your 1/2 hexie braid quilts.
what a great read your blog today, lovely old photos, re the rollers when in late teens I remember them so well, washing hair on a saturday morning and setting it on the rollers then real shame going into Manchester (UK) with a head scarf on shopping in the afternoon, can`t remember hair ever turning out spectacularly though foer all the effort! Also married in 1969 but least said about that the better.
ReplyDeleteLove the flower you made which is a UFO looks good on its own and the other pieces are great too, think I will be popping back for further looks at these.
Love the flower with the batik petals.....those fabrics are beautiful and really set that flower off perfectly!!!! I was in grade school during the 60's and my dad was in the military and we were overseas during some of it, so i missed a lot of the craziness of it!!!
ReplyDeleteThe 1960s. I remember them well. Those were the day's my friend . . . You seem to always have clever ideas for use of fabric and design.

ReplyDeletePretty table runner. Very happy choice of fabrics.
ReplyDeleteI think what I remember the most is roller skates, great exercise by the way. White gloves on Sunday and those dreaded dresses.
ReplyDeleteI do remember the 60,s very well. I graduated in the 60,s and also got married in the late 60.s. The music was better then too.
ReplyDeleteI love the flower tute. I will have to try that out. It gives me inspiration and new ideas are always welcome .
How fun to see all the pictures, some of them very familiar. Your floral hexies are so cool. Thanks for showing us.
ReplyDeleteGreat flower power idea!
ReplyDeleteMy boyfriend from then even wore flowers in his long hair. I married him and now his hair is grey and very short. But I remember. :)
I was born in the mid 1960s so don't remember anything but have heard a lot about the music and actually love the 60s music. Both flower blocks are wonderful and definitely on my "To Do" list. Thanks
ReplyDeleteThe music, freedom revolutions, wild clothes to express yourself, my oldest sister did the whole roller thing. Oh, the VW BUg - loved that car!
ReplyDeleteLove your hexies, the flowers are great in the middle!
ReplyDeleteLove your flowers. I wasn't born yet in the 60's, but I do love the VW Bug, the Smiley face, & the music from that era.
ReplyDeleteAnd the CAR is wonderful, grin
ReplyDeleteWhen you were 13, I was 17 and graduated from high school. What I remember is being glad to move into the dorm at the U of Az and Bob Dylan. =) Vietnam War Protests. USS Pueblo. Seeing the computer where my cousin worked at Rand and being amazed we could type questions on a Selectric and it would type back answers - it was a huge room of machinery, of course! Quilting - basket blocks by hand and hexagons. Avon. =) Big hair. Small wedding in 1966. We thought they'd never end!
ReplyDeleteHey Debby, love your pics. Great flowers, lovely and bright. Can't say I remember much of the 60's, I was born in June of 69, but all my brother's and my sister were still living at home, and my sister spent lots of time with me, so I'm sure it was amazing!
ReplyDeleteI love your orange flower with the batik petals. It's amazing. I didn't arrive on the scene until '77, so I don't know much about the 60s, though the civil rights movement stands out in the history books. BTW your picture post-curlers is gorgeous.
ReplyDeleteI was born in the 60s and mostly remember the fashions and my mom's teased hair. Love what you did with the flower prints! I believe I have some of that fabric and now I'm inspired to do something with it!
ReplyDeleteYou are still absolutely stunning....and your projects reflect the beauty behind those stitches..flower power will never be quite the same for me...love the sixties even more...thanks debby for a trip down memory lane...love the car
ReplyDeleteThe 60's were late elementary and junior high school years for me, and the very beginning of high school. I wore the same rollers in my hair. We wore skirts to school - I remember plaid skirts to around the knee, with knee socks and cardigan sweaters. I listened to some Neil Diamond, Motown, and liked the Beatles in their earlier years. Oh, and weren't the Monkeys then too? Your flowers are so much prettier than the ones then!
ReplyDeleteOhh what fun Debby!! I love how you cut your flowers apart and re made them. Everything turned out fantastic. I was right there with you in the 60s as you got to see yesterday on my day. thanks for a great giveaway
ReplyDeleteDebby, I loved looking at the pictures of you,,,,you were and still are a very pretty girl. The flower petal batiks was a great idea.. I remember going to the airport in Pierre South Dakota to see President Kennedy get off his plane. My Daddy put me on his shoulders so I could see through the crowd.
ReplyDeleteLove reading the history of someone in the years that are mentioned great table runner....wonderful years.
ReplyDeleteI remember the first man on the moon. We were vacationing and my Dad brought a small TV so we could watch it as it was broadcasted.
ReplyDeleteLove those pictures! I remember rolling my hair on orange juice cans. :) blessings, marlene
ReplyDeleteGrowing up in the 60's: quite a wide variety of changes. Mini skirts (and I wore them very carefully!), hippies, bellbottoms. I got my first kiss from a boy and graduated from HS. Flower power and Vietnam. What a combination.
ReplyDeleteBeautiful! You are so creative! I just love what you did! :)
ReplyDeleteAll your projects are beautiful Debby! I was born in the 60s but grew up mostly in the 70s so I don't remember a lot about that era...except the music!
ReplyDeleteLove the flower power! I wasn't born yet, but I love the 60s music anyways!
ReplyDeleteMy hair was long and (ironed) straight, I was in love with the Kennedys and the Beatles, and dangerously innocent. My best friend drove a VW bus and we thought we had all the answers. :)
ReplyDeletethose are all great projects! I graduated from high school in 1966. I also remember learning the twist in grade school at a school dance.
ReplyDeleteJust love your projects today... all of that slicing and dicing and fussy cutting.... just perfect! Love all of your photos.... a blast from the past, for sure!
ReplyDeleteLove your flowers. I enjoyed reading abuot your past projects, too. I've been thinking abut the 60s all month also. The other day I was thinking about S & H Green Stamps. I don't remember much about the 60's, but I do remember riding in the Volkswagon to the Green Stamp store....
ReplyDeleteLoved ready this post as I too was a teenager in the 60's and I remember bell bottom pants and mini skirts and the Beatles . Loved your projects especially the Happy quilt . Thanks for sharing and the chance to win .
ReplyDeletewow you came up with a beautiful design. I lived the 60 with my teased blond hair and bell bottoms. Cruise night in our old souped up cars that bounced at the Steak and Shakes. Loved the sixties.
ReplyDeleteYour flowers are awesome. I don't remember much about the sixties. My mom got sick and being the oldest of six, I became the mom for about a year. Lost a huge chunk of my childhood and missed a year of school.
ReplyDeleteI don't remember a lot about the '60's. I was born in '61. What I do remember is my bedroom wallpaper when we redecorated my room when I was 10. It was these huge bright flowers like in your post. It was a cool room.
ReplyDeletetvbart@charter.net

I love your table runner with the bright and bold color.
ReplyDeleteYour posting was interesting to read and I think my sixities in Sweden was not like yours. From my sixties I remember my life as a student at the university in Lund, learning to be a teacher.
Have a great day and thank you for sharing your creativity.
I graduated high school in 1963 (50th class reunion on Saturday!) and I remember mostly the music. Your Flower Power block is sooo wonderful and a perfect reminder of those days! Thanks for the giveaway.
ReplyDeleteWhat a fun blog you put together today! Looks like I'm 3 years younger than you. I remember getting color TV just in time for the 1968 Democratic Convention - big stuff! And rolling hair with orange juice cans (weird). And watching our men land on the moon. And for a special treat, Mom would take us to the A&W for a root beer on a hot summer night. And then came junior high - argh.
ReplyDeleteWhat a fun post and love all the projects you have made Debby! I remember always putting my hair up in rollers!
ReplyDeleteThe 60's yes bell bottom pants, mini skirts, teased hair and the beautiful music.Living on an Island didn't make for anything much and i loved book and music i guess i was the quiet type.
ReplyDeleteI, too, was a child of the 1960s. I remember all the historic momentous events (JFK, the moon walk, Woodstock) but also starting junior high (yes I had hair rollers, too). Remember bonnet hair dryers? Polyester pant suits? Go Go boots? Bikinis?
ReplyDeleteThanks for the memory trip! Love those fabrics.
Love all your projects!! The idea of cutting the flowers in fourths is great. The 60's for me was the great music! Batiks are my favorite and I sleep under a batik quilt that makes me feel so good. You blog is wonderful!!!
ReplyDeleteI love all your old photos, Debby! Very pretty graduation picture. The sixties were elementary school for me. I remember that most of school I really didn't like. I remember learning how to type on a manual Royal typewriter and being the fastest in the class! I think I was eleven then.
ReplyDeleteLove looking at old photos and your table runner is so beautiful
ReplyDeleteLove your projects - thanks for sharing. We were living in Alaska in the early 60s. I remember the Cuban Missile Crisis, though at the time we didn't know that's what it was. The Army base was on a kind of lock-down & my Dad was on high alert (MI officer). Thanks for the chance to win.
ReplyDeleteLovely! I like how you rearranged the flowers to make a whole new look. I wasn't born in the 60s but I remember watching the Beach Party movies as a kid during the summers. Not sure if they depict the true 60s or not, but they sure were fun to watch. :)
ReplyDeleteHow fun to see you as a girl! Do you remember using orange juice cans to roll your hair? And trying to sleep on them??? (That was before they finally came out with curlers big enough for that straight look!)
ReplyDeleteYour quilt panel is beautiful! Great job, Debby!
Love your flowers - so bright and cheerful. My most vivid memory of the 60's is of when JFK was shot.
ReplyDeleteWe are about the same age so I remember much the same things. Those awful rollers, bell bottom pants. Peace signs, Beatles and then Simon and Garfunkel.
ReplyDeleteI love what you did with the panel pieces. I really love the ones with the leaves.
Life was different in the 60s. I graduated from HS in 1960 we were not allowed to wear anything other than skirts. We also had a car like you had in your picture. It was a second car so mom could teach school while my dad worked out of town building missle sites. Have enjoyed reading all the posts. Brings back so many memories.
ReplyDeleteMary Carter
I luved your post today-the pics were great and that black floral is gorgeous! I can sympathize with you about the state of the sewing room-i just found a charm pack of Tula Pink Neptune that I did not even know I had purchased!
ReplyDeleteWell, I happen to love your first attempt... I can see an entire quilt with blocks like that. Your batik petals block is gorgeous too... I would make either in a new york minute. :)
ReplyDeleteI remember getting to do my granny Ella's hair in the 60's while I was growing up. She would wash her hair and then I would take little snippets, curl it around my finger, lay it flat on her head in a coil and put a bobby pin through it. I did all of her hair like that. This was done on Saturday night so her hair would look good for church on Sunday. I have no idea how she slept on those things!
Those were the days my friend. I was 12 then! Great quilts. You always delight!
ReplyDeleteI love your use of the flower printed fabrics. I remember those hair rollers and the big hair in your class picture. Neat use of hexies with flower center. Tanks for the memory lane trip.
ReplyDeleteLoved seeing those pictures...I had the exact same hairstyle in high school only I was 5 years ahead of you...sigh...thanks for sharing your UFO's and your tablerunner and thanks for the giveaway!
ReplyDeleteAh, rollers in our hair...how did we ever sleep with those things! I love all your pics and the memories they've brought back. Your lone flower is beautiful cut from that panel and your flower petals are just gorgeous. Thanks for sharing!
ReplyDeleteHa! I was around in the 60's, so yes...I'm dating myself. The biggest thing I can remember from the 60's was the music, and the rollers, and sitting under the portable hairdryer!
ReplyDeleteThanks for the chance to win!
I loved seeing your pictures. The 60's were eventful in my life. I got married in 1960 and had all my children in the 60's, 1961, 62, and 64. Whew!
ReplyDeleteI love, love these flowers! Wonderful! I remember the fat guy that was always "grooving" I never knew if he had a name or not! The butterflies! Wow! How they always were always so swirly and twirling around. So groovy, man!
ReplyDeletewhat great pieces.... and a trip down memory lane with you. thanks for sharing your past and your quilts. What I remember form the 60's is that as kids we where outside playing all the time and hardly ever watched the TV.
ReplyDeleteinstitchesandseams@hotmail.ca

Remember the small B&W tv's, the funny sit-com's, the Beatles and the Monkey's. Those were the wonder years. Trip down memory lane. Thanks, from northern Iowa.
ReplyDeleteGreat job.Love those rollers! Oh what we had to do for beauty. Love your batiks. Grat waya to use those flowers. Thank you so much for taking us down memory lane and being part of this hop.
ReplyDeleteI am a few years younger than you, I remember the music, bell bottom pants. Thanks for sharing your pics.
ReplyDeleteWell, I've heard that we went to the moon... lol! And a certain president was the youngest ever elected. My parents were born in 1963, so they barely remember things either, but my grandma was saying the other day how being a rodeo girl you were allowed to barrel race, and that was it.
ReplyDeleteI really like the flowers, I can see why that fabric was so popular, they spring right into your face! Thank you for the giveaway!
~Brandy
Debby what a cutie you were in your younger photos. I love how you used the flower in the center of those batiks. Wow it's really stunning.
ReplyDeleteGreat ideas! I remember learning to sew in the mid-60's--my sister and I were permitted to use my mother's sewing machine to make clothes for our Chatty Cathy and Barbie dolls. Looking back, I can't believe we managed to work with those little fiddly (esp the Barbie!) pieces.
ReplyDeleteDebby-You would never believe how San Jose looks now! I have dinner with my sister who lives there once a week. I escaped the latter half of the sixties in SF by going to a more traditional college town in NoCal valley. I met my husband at CCSF but he went in the army and served in Vietnam so we didn't get married until early '70's. Now my daughter lives in the Haight because it's near her work and we live in the 'burbs.
ReplyDeleteYour batik projects are far-out! I love the hexies and the flower power. Batiks are one of my favorite and I'm constantly using/collecting them. Just finished a quilt for a friend. Thanks for sharing.
Rosemary
Its all beautiful, including you.. I was born 1963, 1967 my father drove away and left us.... plus Vietnam
ReplyDeleteI was a toddler in the sixties but love the wild colors in it. Funny but I wore a lot of the same stuff in the seventies. My sister had the same teased hair in her graduation picture.
ReplyDeleteAs a child of the very early 70s, I can't remember a thing about the 60s. I can tell you horror stories about the handme down clothes that must have been from the 60s tho! BTW-I like the idea of cutting the fowers into 4ths and making something else out of them...must remmber that one...
ReplyDeleteWhat a fun read this was! I loved the old pictures! You are absolutely stunning! Loved your projects. You twisted those flowers into something gorgeous. Thank you for your post. I am feeling positively groovy now!
ReplyDeleteI was married in 1960 and had 3 kids by 1966 so I was busy. Not much time to smell the flowers. I do that now.
ReplyDeleteI was married in 1960 and had 3 kids by 1966 so I was busy. Not much time to smell the flowers. I do that now.
ReplyDeleteGee Debbie, I remember so much, it was a different world then. I remember those rollers all the time and the blow dryer with the bonnet. I remember bell bottoms and the skating rink on Friday and Saturday nights. Too many things have changed! It was a neater time and the world was safer then!
ReplyDeleteBeautiful work! I love how you quartered the flower and put it back together, also they way you used the flower as a center and added petals. Both are very creative! The 60's were such a dynamic era. There is so much to remember--the civil rights movement, assassinations, Kent State, the Vietnam War, hippies, folk music, protest songs, etc. I graduated from high school in 1967, went to college, and got married during the 60's. My husband's first car looked something like the one in your picture. He had a '49 Plymouth. Such an unsettling time, but lots of good memories.

ReplyDeleteI love the way you made those flowers...they are so colorful, just beautiful. My memories of the 60's, well, I stared school in 1960 . I think those days were so much more simpler. You didn't hear of all the violence, as kids, we could walk all over town and our parents didn't worry. Just be home for supper. We didn't sit in front of the TV or computers. We were outside playing with the neighbor kids. I have many good memories.
ReplyDeleteGreat blog post..I graduated in 1969 so I look on the 60's as a wonderful memory and with fondness. Wanting to be a hippie, loving batiks and tie dyes, sewing far-out outfits to wear. I haven't changed that much at least in my love of batiks, tie dyes and bright colors. If I could I would quilt almost totally with them.
ReplyDeletethelady at hotmail.com
WoW! your creations are so cool.
ReplyDeleteDuring the 60's I was in grammar school. I remember hanging with all the neighbor kids playing hide and seek.
Yes I remember the rollers and taking hrs to dry hair, we sat under those plastic caps that filled full of air when you turned on and you looked like you would take off. This hop has been fun so many memories. All of your projects are so beautiful and colourful. I love the runner and the way you constructed it. Thanks for sharing.
ReplyDeletePretty flower quilt you made.

I graduated from high school in 1960, went to college, got married in 1962, and graduated from college in 1964. When I think of the 60's, I think of flower children, Woodstock, burning bras, and streaking. Or was some of that in the 70's. It all becomes a little fuzzy:) Nancy: rangerer@sbcglobal.net
ReplyDeleteI was not born yet but I always think of the 60's as a time of getting out of the box sort of time. The beginning of the wild child generation. I have that same panel in white, now I know what to do with it.
ReplyDeleteWhen I remember the 60's, I think of the transistor radios. We took them everywhere. And listening to the count-downs of the hit lists. But that might have been creeping into the 70's.
ReplyDeletewonderful pictures. You are still pretty. Your quilts are awesome. I was born in '58 so remember only a little of the 60's. But I really do remember wearing hip huggers and bell bottoms. And getting to let some of my midriff show. Mom wouldn't let me wear a mini skirt except in the house. At the time I couldn't understand. When my daughter wanted to wear a mini skirt at the age of 10 I totally got it. LOL.
ReplyDeleteDebbie, I can relate to all that you said about the "big" hair and the big rollers. I had curly hair and I used the big rollers to make my hair straight. And...I did tease my hair...LOL...Oh, also the eyeliner...with the cat eyes...so funny to see it coming back into style again. Thank you for the pictures and the giveaway.
ReplyDeleteThe late 60's saw me entering high school and loving the bright colors and big floral prints in fabric. My mother made almost all of my clothes (I truly enjoyed her custom design and tailoring!). Don't you love seeing these colors and prints come back to life in the (20)10's?
ReplyDeleteHi Debby. Your quilts are so gorgeous. I really love the twisted hexagon. Beautiful! Thank you for sharing.
ReplyDeleteI remember the teased hair and the eye makeup so well. I was a teenager during this time so we had to go all out on the hairdo and the makeup.
What I remember most about that time is going to the drive-in movie theater, the music, and the dances. Thank you for the giveaway.
Absolutely out of this world! Great technique.
ReplyDeleteI was born in the mid 60's but I remember watching Neil Armstrong walk on the moon.
ReplyDeleteGreat job as always. I remember how scandalized my parents were when my older brither went from clean cut to beatles hair. babscorbitt@ gmail dot com
ReplyDeleteI remember watching the Beatles cartoon on Saturday mornings, Cherry Hill Park was my favorite song, and we lived in Seattle for a year while my dad went to graduate school. I loved that, actually, because I was in 4th grade and had never been popular before, but I was popular at my new school. Then we moved back home and it was the usual again, being treated like a mutant by my schoolmates. lol
ReplyDeleteI love the flower blocks you made! They're so bright and colorful!
I don't remember much about the 60's because I was born in 1961. All I know is that being an Air Force family we moved a lot in the 60's...we lived in 3 different states and England during that time. I love your table runner. Thank you for sharing! anglanouette at gmail dot com
ReplyDeleteTotally relate. Your pictures could be of me at the same time period in Sunland, CA (SoCal). I remember my boyfriend had a large flower attached to the antena of his VW Bug.
ReplyDeleteI remember that in the early 60's, we weren't allowed to wear slacks to school. It was a great day when my high school allowed us to wear granny dresses (long prairie style dresses). Wearing protest buttons created a lot of controversy in school. What a decade!
ReplyDeleteI wasn't born yet but my brother and sister were babies. My mom says she doesn't remember all the wild stuff you hear about. She was too busy with babies to worry about it!
ReplyDeleteI remember getting my Barbie dolls in 1963 with clothes that hung all over the Christmas tree at my grandmother's house. That's because she made them all for me but told me Santa had left them there for me because he knew I'd be visiting. They were my prize possesions and I still have both the dolls and the clothes. I also remember no AC in homes, cars, schools, or churches. Going to JCPenney on Saturday in the hot southern summer was a real treat because they did have AC. I remember watching Captain Kangaroo, Looney Tunes, and other black and white TV shows. Would that we could go back to those days, even if soup beans and cornbread were standard fare for supper every night.
ReplyDeleteWell I was around in the 60's (just) but I remember nothing about them except the music! I had 3 older sisters and the record player was always blaring out the current hits, the Beatles and the Everley Brothers were two favourites!
ReplyDeleteBright, bold and beautiful! Did I mention groovy?
ReplyDeleteAll the eyeliner and mascarra I used to wear
ReplyDeleteAll the eyeliner and mascarra I used to wear
ReplyDeleteGorgeous projects!
ReplyDeleteI remember the mini skirts the most!!
SUch a fun post and giveaway!
Great blog post! Loved the pictures. I was born in '62 so I remember a little. I had my appendix out, and spent a week in the hospital. Our family got a tent and went camping. I got my first Barbie doll, too! Fun!
ReplyDeleteI'm a late 50's baby, so quite young thru the 60's, but i do remember the clothes and the hair. Wonderful. Thanks so much for sharing
ReplyDeleteGreat post, lovely pictures.
ReplyDeleteYour twist to the 60's quilt are beautiful, just love the flowers you've made. thanks for sharing and the chance to win the gorgeous batiks.
Love that flower fabric..Your table runner amazing!! The colors are so bright and cheery. I graduated in 1964 and got married in 1965, so missed all the hippie things that went around. I loved the 60's and 70's..So much happened in my life in those years. Thank you for sharing.
ReplyDeleteYour love and taste for bright color is stunning. I'm a fall/orange-brown-black and white kind of stitcher! Love to browse colorful works of art!
ReplyDeleteI really diggin your flower power pieces of love! I lived through the 60's and thankfully avoided Woodstock, Smoking Pot and other hallucinogenic things. I did learn to drive in a Volkswagen bug...so hip! Pink foam rollers that didn't allow my hair to ever dry. Your curly flip is groovy! My favorite piece you created is the petals around the flower center! Gorgeous!! Thanks for a fun hop and a generous give. Creative Stitching Bliss...
ReplyDeleteI grew up in the 60's not to far from you in Mountain View. Those were the days. I had the same kind of senior picture.
ReplyDeleteLove your flowers with the batiks!! I remember going under our desks at elementary school , for drills. And wanting a pair of pink bell bottom pants!!

I was born in the 60's so I don't remember much. I do remember the first day of Kindergarten and having to take naps in the middle of the classroom floor. If you didn't sleep, you had to be really quiet so the other kids could nap. I did get my "first kiss" in kindergarten, too, so that was memorable!

I was a HS 60's gal too. Lots and lots of memories. My brother brought a brand new Volkswagen beetle home from Germany. We were one of the first in Salt Lake City in get a bug and the only one that color for a long time. I was just learning to drive and that stick shift and the hills we lived on didn't get along all that well. Loving the trip down memory land. Thanks.
ReplyDeleteLove all your projects . Especially the pillows with the black batics with the white etchings. I remover this flower fabric when it was being sold. I was born in 1969. I remember my mom and aunts would get together and do their hair all day... They all had long hair and one aunt always had a bee hive hairdo...lol..they worked on aunt Bonnie's hair all day. And I loved all the old cars and trucks. My mom used to play Elvis on the radio constantly and sing along..those were the days...good memories
ReplyDeleteI love the pillow and love the table runner. I was in the 6th grade, but remember my mom sewing and the rolling our hair with big rollers and using the hair dryer that sat on the table that had a bonnet to cover your head. I still have the hair dryer and it works. I love the colorful batiks. I am ready to try making something using the hexie blocks.

ReplyDeleteGorgeous flowers...all of them!! Great job. Thanks for sharing with us. I graduated high school in 1965 and I remember the mini skirt in the late 60's. I even wore maternity dresses mini! Wow, not anymore. ;o)
ReplyDeleteI remember the Beatles appearing on the Ed Sullivan show for the first time, I remember McDonalds opening up, I remember the last section of the St Louis Arch being put in place, I remember the Peanuts cartoon strip appearing in the St Louis Post Dispatch for the first time and I remember getting my diploma from St Louis University being the first in my family to get a degree. Awesome times.
ReplyDeleteI love your blocks and table runner - very colorful and cheery.
ReplyDeleteI remember learning the twist, loving Motown and then the Beatles and Rolling Stones, the day President Kennedy was shot- I was a Junior in HS, sleeping on big rollers in HS and letting my hair go straight and long in college, learning to drive on our '61 VW bug, and of course all my male friends that served our country in Viet Nam.
I forgot to say what i remember about the 60's. I graduated from high school in 1966.
ReplyDeleteI remember the tension in my high school between the peaceniks and the guys with the flags on their jackets and car windows. (Of course, you know what they say, anyone who says they remember the 60's wasn't actually there...
ReplyDeleteI remember Summer dances at the pavilion in the park.
ReplyDeleteLove all your flowery projects. The flowers with power are quite striking. Look very cool quartered.
ReplyDeleteDebby, every time I visit your blog I'm amazed by your beautiful work. Your flowers are awesome, and your pictures are great fun! I remember getting my first Barbie doll in the sixties. She had jet black hair, a black and white swimsuit, and lots of eye makeup.
ReplyDeleteBeautiful! I remember playing outside, all over the neighborhood on warm summer nights. My granddaughter asks about what it was like and is jealous of that freedom. The world has changed a lot since then.
ReplyDeleteI wasn't born yet =) I know there were flower power bugs ( vw's covered in flowers and peace signs), weird hairdos and many people smoked weed.
ReplyDeleteGorgeous debby! I love the pillow. So very pretty and I love the photos too.

I was in elementary school during the 60's. I remember all the girls had to wear dresses to school everyday. We would bring pants to put on under our dresses when it was winter and we had to go outside for recess. Thanks for sharing the pictures of yourself and for the giveaway.
ReplyDeleteYou have some amazing design ideas!! Love what you do!!! I was born in the 60's and what I remember most and from looking at photos from back then are the big hairdos!!!
ReplyDeleteI love what you did with the flowers! I was in grade school during the 60's, so I don't remember too much.
ReplyDeleteSuch a fun post and beautiful projects. I laughed when I saw the rollers. Oh how I remember rolling my hair with the brush rollers. Too funny.
ReplyDeleteYour quilts are beautiful. I love the various patterns from one panel. WoW! I really like the flowers that evolved when you cut them into 4ths and then reconstructed. They really caught my eye. And I adore your Twisted Hexagon.
ReplyDeleteI graduated from HS in 1969 and began college at the only university in our state at the time.
Thanks for participating and inspiring me. You are very generous with your giveaway!
I LOVED seeing the pictures. Yes, I can understand why your dad stayed in the garage. I remember that we wore those rollers in our hair all day long!!! We actually put them IN our hair in the mornings!!! Oh dear.
ReplyDeleteYour flowers are gorgeous. Great work.
Don't remember much about the 60s except bell bottoms and mini skirts. Love all your flower quilts.
ReplyDeleteThose are really wonderful projects! The 60's were a busy time for me with all my children being born. (4) Thanks for the giveaway.
ReplyDeleteOoh, love the Flower Power results--all of them! You have such a keen eye for colors and blending! What do I remember about the 60's: I was born and raised in SF...catholic grade school with uniforms, skinny as a stick with glasses...I lived four blocks from the beach and two from the zoo! Ha! THAT beats everything! We had a near 'tidal wave' one year when I was at a birthday party a block from the beach! But I LOVE the beach... Ah.. such memories...Would love to win those batiks... Am new to the Quilt world, and want to give it a try with smallish projects! Hugs!

I remember President Kennedy being shot in 1993. I was in the 3rd grade. I remember all the race riots towards the end of that decade.
ReplyDeleteI like the quilts. Now i know that the hair style you had in the pictures was of the 60's.Traffic and pollution did not exist. love that.-wilmaserrao8@gmail.com
ReplyDeleteGreat projects. Love both the flower pillow and the hexagon wall hanging.
ReplyDeleteI was young in the 60's, but I remember wearing white gloves to church and carrying handkerchiefs with tatting done by Grama!
ReplyDeleteI remember walking around town on a Saturday with those big brush rollers in my hair covered by a scarf. Every girl would be getting ready for her Saturday night date. Also remember driving my parents' 58 white Chevy Impala to school everyday.
ReplyDeleteI remember bell bottom pants that hung on your hips, not your waist. I had to iron my hair to get it straight. I was so envious of those girls with the poker straight hair!
ReplyDeleteLove your projects....I remember nothing about the 60's even though I was born in the 60's...1969. :)
ReplyDeleteI remember being in college, and many people against the war in Vietnam while my brother served in Vietnam...
ReplyDeleteYou were gorgeous in the 60s!! Your quilts are gorgeous, too. That's some amazingly groovey flower fabric. I, too, thought the first block wasn't up to your standards but, WOW, did you ever turn it around and made some fabulous blocks. Let's see...60s...a super group of friends that are still friends and love spending time together, a young hubby that stole my heart away, bell bottoms and a figure to go with them (!), twistin' the night away with 60s music... What fun, what memories, what a life!
ReplyDeleteI graduated from high school in '67, husband (then fiance) went to Viet Nam in '68, stepped on a landmine and was sent home with only a crushed ankle they were able to save, and married him in '69. I remember hair rollers. I had fairly long hair at the time and tried using orange juice cans to get a really soft curl. Glad I didn't get into the hippie culture, thank goodness.
ReplyDeleteJust catching up after being gone for a few days. I love your runner. Sew pretty. I remember lots about the 60's. My sister was 9 years older than I was and she had so much cool stuff in her room that I wasn't allowed to touch. 45's, cool belts and jewelry. I wasn't allowed to even go in there most of the time.
ReplyDeleteI was born in 1964. I have lots of childhood memories from the 1960's. Here's something I remember: 3-arm-hole dresses made by my grandmother for my mom and me. Does anyone else remember those?
ReplyDeletereally really awesome. It always amazes me what people can do with panels. Really wonderful.
ReplyDeleteLove your table runner. The first thing that I remember about the 60s,
ReplyDeletewas when JFK was assassinated. I was
in 2nd grade, I remember everyone watching it on TV. Thanks for the
chance to win!
