Fruit Salad and a Wild Watermelon Quilt
Sometimes my ideas get a bit zany and I only blame it on the fabric, of
course. I started out with good intentions but I guess my taste buds got the better of me.
I have my two winners: Sharon of New York (who lives on Quilt Lane, can you believe it!) won the Strawberries bundle and Elizabeth of Sweden (the country) won the Cherrys bundle. CONGRATULATIONS!
I received a lovely bundle of Fruit Salad fabrics by Benartex and the watermelon images jumped out at me. What do you think?
What? You don't see watermelon? You see strawberries
and blueberries and cherries? Hold on. I'm getting to the watermelon,
because I WANTED watermelon and I tried to make this a watermelon quilt.
You have to head on over to the Sew in Love with Fabrics blog (Benartex) to see what I came up with using some of these fabrics. But once you start, you know you just have to keep going.
I have two bundles of LONG QUARTER cuts from this collection. Each contains 5 long quarters (9" x wof). I don't like fat quarters when I'm working with a quilt that needs borders and long strips.
Let me know if you've ever made a quilt and used it for a table
cloth. And tell me which of the two bundles you like. I will select two

Love the table quilt with all the fruit. I haven't used my wedge templates in a long time. I have to go with my love of blue and pick the cherry/berries. I have a collection of fruit fabrics (mostly apples) and these would add nicely to finally make a quilt - instead of petting the fabrics.
ReplyDeleteAbsolutely hilarious quilt - loved it!!Great idea and so creative! WOW. I used a quilt as a tablecloth only once (at a Christmas party and someone spilled orange soda on it...yipes...) so I think I would probably put clear vinyl over it next time! Love both colorways but I am partial to blueberries! :)

ReplyDeleteI have only made just a few quilts so far and haven't used them as a table cloth -- unless spreading it on the floor for the grands to lay on while eating snacks I. Front of the TV counts!!

The tablecloth you made is adorable. I've used many of my quilts on my dining room table. We never use the table so I'm comfortable using it as a display piece for my quilts. I love both give away bundles, so neither one would be neglected in my studio should I win. Thanks for the fun!
ReplyDeleteI've used a lot of my quilts for tablecloths! It is a fun way to enjoy my quilts that are not on the beds, walls, etc. After all, one cannot have too many quilts, right?

ReplyDeleteLoved your tutorial! I have made one "quilt" that became a tablecloth. Many years ago my sister wanted a tree skirt, so I offered to make one. I designed it myself on graph paper. Then I sewed it up and it was HUGE. Not tree skirt sized at all. So I didn't cut the opening for the tree trunk and I had it quilted (no batting, just backing fabric) so my MIL could use it on her round table at Christmas time. Actually she still uses it every year. I scaled the pattern down to a more reasonable size and it made a lovely tree skirt. The pattern even got published in a magazine.

The first quilt I ever made was originally a wall hanging, but has also been used as a table topper, and as a decorative throw across the back of a chair.

Love your table cloth! I have never made a quilt to cover the entire table. I've only made ones for the center. I like both sets of fabric, but I'd say I like the Cherries and Berries, Purple Colorway, a bit more. susan430 at cox dot net
ReplyDeleteMany many many years ago, I made a tablecloth for my mom. I just cut and sewed blocks together. I think I zigzagged along the seams to catch the raw edges underneath. Didn't sandwich it at all. Just a plain patchwork cloth that she used on the kitchen table. I think she still has it. Probably from back in the 70s would be my guess. Love your fruity-melon quilt :)

ReplyDeleteI have not made a full table cloth but have made a table topper for Christmas. It is a Christmas wreath made from a twister ruler. I have also made two table runners for my daughter-in-law. I have never made the Dresden plate but after seeing this I am inspired.

I've never made a quilt and used it for a tablecloth because I've always had very messy children, and now that they are grown, I've been blessed with a grandchild, and she is pure messy joy. But I would love to hang a quilt like yours on the wall of my kitchen! Thanks for sharing this, and I love the first bundle with the blues.

I purchased a lap size quilt kit once and I didn't care for the pattern as a quilt but it made a great picnic table cloth. I just omitted the batting and backed it with a bright color ed print.

ReplyDeleteLove those blueberries! Before I was a quilter, I used a while that had been left in our apartment (kind of gees bend in style) as a tablecloth for a still life, for painting. After I became a quilter, I've only used mini quilts on the table, as centerpieces and teflon shields against clutter! ;D (willing to pay shipping!)

Yes, I have used a quilt as a tablecloth. It's my first quilt I ever made (over 30 years ago) and it's taken on many roles besides being used on a bed. A tablecloth quilt just has the country charm every picnic needs! All you need is family and food! Cherries and Berries, Purple Colorway would be my choice, but they are both super cute bundles!

ReplyDeleteThe watermelon table topper is great! I love - and get - the use of other fruits to make the melon! The triangle at the center reminds me of how I cut off the point of a watermelon wedge and save that best part for last! The only quilt I've made that was used as a tablecloth I gave to a friend who has a sheet of safety glass on top of her table. At home I've made and use several toppers and runners for end tables. While I prefer the blues and greens combination for my décor I do love the orange blender in the red colorway. Thanks as always for sharing tutorials and inspiration. I have never made a quilt that's been used as a tablecloth, at least none that I've made for myself!! Not sure about the ones I've given away...LOL! I like the colors in the top grouping better - I'm much more a blue person than orange! I HAVE made a quilt or two with brighter fabrics, including orange, but I just prefer blues over oranges.

ReplyDeleteYour quilt is stunning! I've made small quilts, which I guess most call tabletoppers, but haven't made a quilted tablecloth. All of the fabric is so fresh and cheery, but I especially like the set with the red and orange and beautiful strawberry print.

ReplyDeleteI love using table cloths for parties, choosing which ones to use according to the theme of the party! I love both colorways, so it is difficult to choose! I'm a watermelon fiend AND a blueberry fiend, so I think I will go with blueberries!

Love the quilt you made with these. I have never made a quilt top and used it as a tablecloth. I love the colorful fruit fabrics though and was just checking them all out awhile back. I thought they'd make a great summer tablecloth.

ReplyDeleteJust absolutely love your table topper. I have made and often use a couple of table toppers for summer lunches, but they are nothing like your delightful creation! I also have a lovely quilt without batting, just a backing so it drapes well on the table, that I made from a piece of chintz fabric for my formal dining table. Yes, I have little table toppers, some from blocks that didn't make it into a final quilt, and some from scraps. I've been thinking about making a fall one. Your tutorial could help me do that, though it won't look like watermelon with fall colors ... maybe pumpkin wedges? =) Thanks to you and to Benartex for the giveaway. Both sets are wonderful, and I love that they are long quarters. If I had to choose one, I'd probably go with the purple one, though they both are so appealing!

Dresden Plate is one of my favorite patterns. Both are great fabrics, but I think the cherries, berries in purple (blue?) colorway edges out the other one.
