Thousand Pyramids Quilts: Day Two

. . . and a free pattern! (Read to the bottom)

Here is Day Two of my Thousand Pyramids quilts (and some variations). This next quilt was made about 18 years ago. This baby is probably in college now!

Thousand Pyramids using all prints

Here is the quilt lying flat on my carpet before putting the binding on. Notice that each triangle is a print and is not alternating with a plain or light "blah" fabric. There is a zig zag look to it, but the triangles are lined up with each other from row to row.

Thousand Pyramids flat to better see the rows

Now, just to shake things up a bit, here's a photo of a quilt made using the SAME triangle shape where they form a hexagon. I called this Hexagon Pinwheel. Very different look, right? But they are horizontal rows of 60 degree triangles, just colored differently!

Hexagon Pinwheels

This is from a collection that came as strips of 5" x 42" plaids. They called them "Fat Rolls." The triangle template is included, but it's pointy. You can easily cut this quilt using your blunted tip ruler. And look at this lovely quilt!

It's easy to cut these 60 degree triangles from strips. But, in 2014 I was part of a challenge where I used a charm pack of 5" squares to make a sweet little Thousand Pyramids quilt. Just a teaser photo:

5" squares of Kona solids

The quilt was such a hit that it was picked up by Modern Patchwork Magazine the same year. And then I made another quilt from the leftovers! Come back next time and you'll see that little quilt using only these solid colors (and some Kona Snow).

  1. I do that with old photos of students I taught. I'm actually in touch with one special student I had in first-third grade, and she's 26 now! Loved seeing these alternatives, and I did order your ruler, in spite of having several similar triangles. I have found that your tools are best and your patterns are easy to follow! I really like the Hexagon Pinwheels and should have waited before ordering the ruler, but it will be fine!
