Really? Do I really have MORE projects made from
Fossil Ferns. Oh, of course I do!
I wrote a blog post about some Twisted Hexagon blocks several years ago. Here are some pictures. I began with 3 fat quarters. I was planning some placemats for my grandsons (who were 2-1/2 and 6 months old at the time.)

. . . to make something for my awesome grandson. Yes, I know I swear not to do anything on my blog except quilts, but I am making an exception for Miles (2-1/2 years old) because of this amazing picture my daughter sent me last week. (This was in 2013. This awesome grandson is now 8-1/2 and in the 3rd grade!)

Hilary, his mom, tells me that the lifeguard cannot keep a straight face when Miles shows up like this every Saturday morning for his swimming lessons. I can't keep a straight face!
What did I make for Miles and his little brother Matteo (who doesn't need placemats yet because he's only 6 months old)?

This is my new, favorite, go-to block. Easy to sew. Can be made with any size hexagon and 1/2 hexagons which are half the height of the hexagon (duh!) You sew them in a round, leaving the first seam open until the end. This is called a partial seam (not a set in seam, which is much harder).

I squeezed a few more blocks out of that charming zoo fabric and my leftover Fossil Fern fabrics and made this child's quilt. It's one of my class samples for my
Twisted Hexagons workshop.

I realize I should have put the
Fossil Fern blocks in opposing corners, but it's too late! But it's such a cute little quilt, I'm sure a little kid won't mind, right?

Twisted Hexagons quilt in my Etsy shop. Easy to piece with no y-seams and I was able to fussy cut some lovely flower motifs in the centers.

Hi Debby! Aww, Miles was so cute and I'm 100% certain he still is. Nothing wrong with smiling at your swim students! He just thought his teacher was thrilled he was there and ready to go with all his gear on. Those are some mighty fine placemats. I especially love the giraffe in the center. ~smile~ Roseanne
ReplyDeleteI bought a FQ of every fossil fern fabric a few years ago. I'm not sure if this offer is still available. I have not used them all yet, and I am really enjoying your suggested patterns for them. I need to get busy. Your grandsons are adorable. I have 3 grandsons also, ages 5, 3, and 1.
ReplyDeleteI understand completely! When my grandson was around the same age-everywhere he went he insisted on wearing the swim goggles and a red cape-he was Thuperman! Somewhere I have a photo of him in Home Depot shopping with his Dad.
