Fossil Ferns: Day 5

Another day. Another project made with Fossil Ferns. Actually, I have two. But both use the same shape and the English Paper Piecing technique.

First, the hexagons:
2" Hexagons
I began teaching workshops on English Paper Piecing (EPP) several years ago. I needed samples! I began with 2" hexagons and several colors of Fossil Ferns. I made a variation of a Grandmother's Flower Garden (GFG) block. Here I have it pinned to a background rectangle (from an older Benartex collection called Palm Springs).

Pinned:

GFG on a background 14" x 18" rectangle
From the back:
Appliquéd with BG fabric removed
And from the front:
Fossil Fern GFG block appliquéd. I made four.
I added some fabrics from the Palm Springs collection as my borders. I have been enjoying using two different prints for borders instead of only one (ho hum). What do you think?

Four rectangular blocks with a 5th GFG block appliquéd over the center
One of my blocks up close:

And one more project using those 2" hexies made from Fossil Ferns:

Four hexagons
And from the back:

And the strip stitched together:
Four units stitched in a zig zag fashion
With borders:

So, have you enjoyed a week of Fossil Ferns? Let's see that box of fat quarters again that I showed you on Day 1. Lots of luscious colors, right?

Fossil Ferns!
And I want to show that group of 2" hexagons one more time. Allow me.

So many hexagons!
I'm pulling out that box again and will rummage through it for some more inspiration. I'll keep you posted. Don't forget to visit the Benartex web site and see the over 100 colors in their Fossil Fern Collection.

  1. Hi Debby! Oh, that box of Fossil Ferns looks so very, very tempting. And yet it also looks like it should be saved and enjoyed. HAHA! Love your choices for hexies. Those are very tempting as well. Happy Saturday! ~smile~ Roseanne

  2. I really loved seeing all your projects in the Fossil Fern fabrics. They are gorgeous indeed. I loved the half-hexagon placemats you made the other day. Making a quilt from these has been on my list for a while now. There just seems to be too many projects to make and not enough time. Have a great weekend!
