| Nothing scary here for my grandson Miles |
As a parent of 3 little girls (in the 1980s), I did not want to create nightmares for them - and sleepless nights for me and my husband - so we banished anything remotely related to frightening, scary or wicked when they were young. Hard to do with our Halloween-crazy culture. I feel the same way for my little grandsons. Hence, I searched high and low for a Halloween print that didn't have scary images - only cute ones. Love this fabric with dogs and cats (and yes, bats).
What did I do with it? Why, a little pillowcase! But I only had a fat quarter, but it's not enough; what to do?

Found another piece of fabric (no scary images) and extended the animal print around to the back:

I decided to make another pillowcase for Halloween. This uses a cat applique I had in one of my box calendars (I think from 2007):

Found an orange, green and black striped fabric for the main body. Added some leaf trim. And these glittery, scary spiders are from last year's Wicked hop.
Took a piece of black fabric and added fusible webbing to wrong side . . .

| Drew the applique onto freezer paper, ironed it to black fabric, and cut out |

| Peeled off freezer paper for the simple shape |

| Used a simple zigzag stitch to join it to center of pillowcase fabric |

| Added a fussy cut owl motif to back of pillowcase. How do I get rid of these spiders? |
Yes, these are very simple projects. I'm traveling again and sewing time is precious. But pillowcases are such fun for my grandson - he loves all the novelty print ones I send.

ReplyDeleteso good to see ntr scary, sure your grandson will love these. I am 66 and still do not like scary, in fact will be in bed with the lights off on 31st! Bit of a wimp really as cannot watch horror films either

ReplyDeleteDebby, children (of all ages) love pillow cases and especially ones made with love by Grandma. Many children lug their pillows around for years and years and years. One of the ladies in our guild ask us to make pillow cases so foster children have something into which to put their few belongings when they move from place to place. The cat would make a cute adornment for a regular pillowcase for that purpose, too. Thanks for participating, being a great inspiration, and being generous to share your pattern.

ReplyDeleteI absolutely love your pillow cases. Halloween doesn't have to be scary. I went through similar feelings with my adopted son - he had enough scary in his young life that I felt I didn't need to add to it. We kept Halloween fun and light.

ReplyDeleteAs a mom of 3 little boys, I have a different situation: they love everything which looks weird and frightening and I am really wondering how they got into this, because I am really not the type to like skeletons and skulls... but I think it just must be a chromosom-thing, evolution-macho-stories or something like this....
