Letting the Fabrics Do All the Talking

Image
We all have them: bundles of fat quarters that we don't know what to do with. They are exciting fabrics but we begin to think that having only a piece 18" x 22" is going to restrict us in what we make. Well, I had this fun FQ bundle of Rumble by Windham Fabrics since 2015! FQ bundle of Rumble fabrics by Windham Those lions and tigers and elephants and birds were screeching so loudly last week that I had to pull them off the shelf and start cutting! They told me that they waited enough and it was TIME to Rumble! I was able to make not one, not two, BUT THREE little kids' quilts from the four animal prints, the blenders and some random fabric in my stash. First, I made a 4 block quilt using an old pattern I made for Quilt Magazine 17 years ago. I altered the center squares so I could get more cuts from the leftovers. The striped border is not from the collection. I quickly realized I didn't like sewing with so many triangles, but I had already cut things out and the...

Windham Wednesdays with Norma Rose

You can do a lot with fat quarters, even make a large quilt. But did you know you can get 3 quilts from a generous set of those bundles? You've seen two of these before, but I was rummaging through my workshop boxes and found some samples that cried: "Please, Miss Debby. Please make us into a quilt!" First, the oldest quilt: This was from a 2020-2021 Mystery Quilt project done for my local quilt guild. It is not my pattern and I was really nervous to sew something with no idea of where I was going. Yes, I did have to add some no-name cream blender, some cream Kona Snow, and a burgundy blender. But all the beautiful prints are from the 2020 Norma Rose Collection by Windham Fabrics. Norma Rose Mystery Quilt: 54" x 54" You can see my nervous steps by typing in "Mystery Quilt" in the search bar. I absolutely loved the fabrics so much, that I made a second quilt. First, the fabrics. The second quilt is made of basic 60 degree diamonds surrounded by strips a...

Tell Me About Pre-Cuts: Day Six

You knew this was coming - Fat Quarters! I can remember when they first came on the market and it honestly didn't make sense to me. But, they have to be one of the most popular of fabric cuts - and, they are quite the impulse buy, right? Quick - I'll wait. Go count your dozens of fat quarter bundles. Are you back? I counted mine and they're in the dozens. Then there are the ones that became quilts. A fat quarter is one quarter of a yard of fabric. A yard of fabric is 36" x 42/44". A typical quarter yard is 9" x 42". A fat quarter is when you take the 36 x 44 piece and cut it into equal quarters. Hence, a "fat" quarter! Let me show you some recent sets of fat quarters. The first is Gingham Play by Michael Miller. I keep coming back to them because their "print" is not only traditional but the colors are so fresh and bright and modern. Gingham Play fat quarters by Michael Miller I used these with Fairy Frost (again, just a set of fat qu...

Norma Rose Wasn't Done Inspiring Me!

Remember this from last week? The fabrics are so clear and fun and fresh. Norma Rose by Natalie Barnes uses all my favorite colors. And they said they weren't done with me! Norma Rose Fabrics  (released in October 2020) So, I decided to play with more 4-1/2" diamonds! Here I am cutting them from a fat quarter. All I had were fat quarters! I cut a 60 degree slice from the side and then cut 4-1/2" diamonds using the 60 degree lines on the ruler. You've seen those lines before, right? Cutting 4-1/2" diamonds My idea was to surround these diamonds with strips, like a Log Cabin. My little Chicken Pin Cushion was overseeing things to make sure I was doing things right! I cut these strips 1-1/2" wide. Diamonds and strips I didn't take a lot of photos. I was just having fun cutting and stitching. As you can see in the partially pieced diamond above, I sewed the strips on all 4 sides, trimming as I went. These blocks turned out pretty large! 10" from flat s...
