Thankful Tuesday: Student Waterwheels Quilts

Image
My Waterwheels quilt began in early 2000 with some Fossil Ferns and a simple paper pieced pattern that I called Spinning Blades. I had this in a suitcase that was stolen in 2005 (along with 30 other quilts). I like to say they are hanging on that Giant Quilt Rack in the Sky! Spinning Blades I remade the pattern and taught it several times recently. I'll show you my class sample, but first: here is one in green by Sharon D. from a class I taught in 2019. Thank you, Sharon, for making this in such beautiful colors! Spinning Waterwheels by Sharon D. I remade it in 2007 using some greens and blues and split up the blocks using sashing. It appeared in my last book, Paper Piecing Perfect Points. I gave this away to my grandson's preschool teacher, Miss Jamal. Green Spinning Waterwheels. 54" x 76" I pulled blacks and whites and reds for a new sample. I added sashing. I wasn't sure about it. I made another and then I really knew that I didn't like the sashing - it in...

Thankful Tuesdays: For My Students' Quilts!

Image
Last week I asked you to send me photos of quilts you've made from my workshops or even just a pattern. I got this beautiful rendition from Connie D. of the Annapolis Quilt Guild. She took my Modern Vortex Quilt class in 2016 and sent this to me to share here. Modern Vortex by Connie D. of Annapolis, MD I designed this quilt based on a vintage quilt made in red and white (I've shared it here before several times). I began teaching this workshop in 2013 for the Sewing Expo. I think I've taught it at least 2 dozen times. It's really a variation on a traditional Dresden Plate quilt. The one below was made using a 5" charm pack of squares. You can get two blades from each square! Charming Dresdens Here is another one in process. I only have this student's last name (Bernard). She knows who she is. I love it in the blues, too! Now, this one from Dawn P is a real treasure! She went to town and made 9 blocks! What a fabulous quilt this is. 9 Block Vortex Quilt by Da...

Workshop with Delmarvelous Guild

Image
What a fun and creative bunch of ladies! Last Thursday (May 25) I had the pleasure to spend the entire day with the Delmarvelous Quilt Guild of Georgetown, Maryland. There were 19 students for my Circles of Geese class. It is based on not one, not two, not three, but FOUR quilts (I just found a fifth one!) I made using my halo of geese. Let me first show my quilts and then showcase what two of my students did. This first one is made in four sections and the center circle is fussy cut (a lovely toile), interfaced and then appliqued over the large center hole! Quite easy. Toile Garden Medallion (in Paper Piecing Perfect Points book, 2013)  Then I made one with brighter colors: My Geese Have the Blues And then one with novelty prints: Geese Rings using novelty fabrics  And another one with novelty prints: Fun kids' prints, since gifted to some little child And my fifth quilt (which was actually my 2nd quilt using the large center circle). It has sinc...

I Love YOUR Quilts!

Image
They've been piling up, those fabulous quilt pictures from YOU. Projects you've made from my patterns either from here on my blog or from a class you've taken from me. I thought I would take some time to honor your work. This will take a few weeks because I'm already up to 40+ pictures! Did I say "WOW" yet? These are in no particular order. But you will agree with me that they are each beautiful. This is from Alice W. of Maryland who took my Modern Vortex class (center block). She added all those extra blocks to turn this into a Quilt of Valor. Very, very clever. Lucky recipient! Alice W.'s Modern Vortex Quilt of Valor Next are some finished quilts from a guild in Canada. These are 4 of the ones entered in the Medicine Hat Quilt Show. Can you believe these? The 2015 Galaxy of Stars BOM is still available here. See tab at the top of this page (or click that link). Tasty Leftovers and Scrap Buster Quilts

Image
I have been thinking about all my scrap buster quilts and how I should begin sharing them here in blogville. Over the years I've done many articles for Quilt Magazine about how to pull all those scraps that gather under my cutting table into tasteful quilts. Stay tuned for some tutorials on that, but I want to show you a few to get you interested: Tasty Leftovers #3 OK. Where's Tasty Leftovers #1? I'm looking. I'm looking . . . This was a magazine cover, too. One of the publishers wanted to buy it. I couldn't part with it (and still own it). A class I taught in my Kaffe Fassett Club at Intown Quilters (Atlanta). We gathered all our leftover strings and strips and we pieced on 8-1/2" x 11" rectangles of newsprint. I had this quilted and gifted to my daughter's mother in law after surgery. Isn't it a happy quilt? String pieced on 8-1/2" x 11" newsprint Here is one of my students' quilts: Strips and leftovers ...

Student Quilt - Cupid's Arrows

Image
Cupid's Arrows by Dawn P. from Atlanta I love seeing what my students finish, and Dawn took this class at the Quilting Live! Show in Atlanta in September. This is a Palm Block, also called Hosannah. I called the class "Cupid's Arrows" because it was part of a blog hop around Valentine's Day. This is paper pieced and is done in an off-center log cabin approach, so that there are no units to join - when you're done piecing, the block is finished. My Cupid's Arrows class sample If you look closely, she used a wonderful paw print in the block and also in the border. Don't you just love you she made the best use of the curvy fabric in the setting triangles? What to GO, Dawn! The block is 7" finished. It is from my latest book, Paper Piecing Perfect Points . Students learned not only how to paper piece, but also how to set blocks on point. You can see the quilt I made for the book by following the link above. I have many several quilts using ...
