Back to School with Windham Wednesdays

It's that time of year when all the little kiddies go back to school (whether they like it or not)! I remember when my 3 little girls dressed up for their first day each September. Even have one pic with Hilary (now 31) in her girlie dress and white gloves with hearts on the top. I wish I had saved those sweet little gloves (and those lacey socks and jellies). Sigh.

My favorite oldest grandson goes to preschool 3 times a week (so Hilary can work). I received this awesome collection by Windham Fabrics called "A is for . . ."

Now I know my A B Cs . . .
Can you believe this handwriting script fabric? Can't wait to make a small book bag for Miles with this. Maybe this is how I can teach him how to write cursive (schools are phasing out that life-skill, go figure).
Look at these hexagons, getting ready for another awesome Hexie project!
But how did I fussy cut these letters? First, I had to find a hexie paper size that would capture the letter to the best advantage. These letters are spilled across the fabric in such a way that you couldn't cut squares without destroying all the neighboring letters. I discovered that a 1-3/4" hexagon paper was the perfect size.
Cut a piece of freezer paper for a 1-3/4" hexie window to center the letter
Then cut a hexie window (with a 3/8" seam allowance). This is how it worked.
See how perfectly this size worked with these letters. Hoorah!
OK. Where am I going? Let the pictures tell the beginning of the story. I'll have more pics when the project progresses.
A is for Apple
B is for Boy
C is for Cat

MILES is for, well, Miles (my grandson)

Just love, love, love these letters. And all these companion fabrics.
