Flower Power - Blog Hop Twist-a-long

Yes, I lived through the 1960s (junior and high school years - please don't do the math). Today we revisit the 1960s and what I remember, living in California at the time, is FLOWER POWER.

(Click here to view this in your web browser)

But, first some pics of me in the 1960s. Notice this first one; I kept the date on it so it would be believable. LOOK AT THAT CAR IN THE BACKGROUND ON MY STREET!!!
In 1965 I was 13 years old, living in San Jose, California. SEE THAT CAR?!!
How about Christmas morning? I'm with Kathy on the left (about 6 years old) and Janet on the right (about 11 years old). Get a load of those rollers! No wonder my dad spent most of his time out in the garage (4 daughters and a wife).

I don't think it did a lot of good, but a girl has to try!
How did those curlers work out? (Me, a few years later - did I really have that much hair?)
Oh, and did I say that my mom was an Avon lady who sold makeup door to door?

There was a LOT of teasing going on with that hair; and lots of eye makeup
And then an Easter morning with Janet (1 year younger than me; no wonder my mom floated in and out of sanity all those years . . .)
Janet and me, high school. Mom, in her 40s and losing the victory
Flower Power (Lazy Daisies fabric from 2007)
I remembered this awesome panel I bought in 2007, but I couldn't find it in my stash. It has a deep, solid black background. Where was it? Can anyone say, "Clean up time?"

This collection was a wildly popular line from Lakehouse Fabrics. There were fabrics that also had light blue and green for the flower backgrounds. First I cut them up as appliques.

My Happy Quilt which is on the cover of my 2014 wall calendar of quilts
I cut out those appliques for bold flowers.
Here they are both cut up and then scattered over the four corners.
I cut my panels up in a different way
Yes, she became another cover girl (1 of 27 covers!)

I gifted this quilt to a friend when her mom died. Lasts longer than cut flowers!

So, with my newly re-discovered flowers with the black backgrounds, I was on a quest to combine some of the elements of both quilts. And, of course, I grabbed some bright batiks!

I started with my cut-out panels:
Two of the four colors of flowers
I thought I would cut up the panels into four triangles.

Yes, I did. I cut these into fourths. I cut SEVERAL panels this way
I sewed them together with other colors. Sliced them before adding outside batik strips. . .
I added 2 rows of batiks, but just wasn't exciting enough. Lonely block, now a UFO
I abandoned this idea and went with another plan, but still intent on using those lush flowers as the center. Now it's time for the BATIKS!
Got out my trusty melon template (from my EZ Double Wedding Ring set)
Fusible on wrong side of batiks. Cut out 8 of each color . . .
Aren't these beautiful batiks? From Sew Batik
This is the second color
I had some black batik with little etchings of white. I trimmed down my orange flower, added the black batik to all four sides and then used these melons as flower petals. I call this Flower Power. What do you think?
Power to the flowers!
20" x 20", just resting on a quilted throw pillow
Then I realized on Tuesday that there was nothing TWISTED in my project. Sure, those petals turned but no twisting was going on. So, I pulled out my TWISTED HEXAGON pattern and using the same center, some new batiks, and I got this:
Twisted Hexagon block with an 8" center (a very large 16" block)
Then I made a mistake cutting out the rest of the half-hexagons and had to tweak a lot of things, but I still was able to make this Twisted Hexagon table runner (needs a border; have to go shopping!).

The black and white fabric is also a batik
Three large blocks make for a very long table runner
So, now I've twisted with the 60s, with batiks, and you got a few pics of yours truly almost 50 years ago!

Giveaway: A jelly roll (2-1/2" strips) of 20 batik fabrics from my stash. Contest is over October 3 at midnight.
Twenty 2-1/2" strips of batiks
What do you have to do? Leave a comment telling me what you remember about the 1960s. If you weren't born then, tell me what you've HEARD about the 60s! Doesn't have to be long.

  1. Love your table runner, sew bright and cheerful! Guess I must be older then dirt as I was married in 1963, LOL! I had lived in San Francisco, but the hippy stage didn't hit me! Thank you for sharing.

  2. Loved the first half of the 60s, hated the second. Fifty years ago, I was a senior in HS ...ouch! BTW, that car in your picture surely must have been someone's antique because it isn't from the 50s or 60s. Looks more like something from a WWII movie.
I've enjoyed making your 1/2 hexie braid quilts.

  3. what a great read your blog today, lovely old photos, re the rollers when in late teens I remember them so well, washing hair on a saturday morning and setting it on the rollers then real shame going into Manchester (UK) with a head scarf on shopping in the afternoon, can`t remember hair ever turning out spectacularly though foer all the effort! Also married in 1969 but least said about that the better.
Love the flower you made which is a UFO looks good on its own and the other pieces are great too, think I will be popping back for further looks at these.

  17. When you were 13, I was 17 and graduated from high school. What I remember is being glad to move into the dorm at the U of Az and Bob Dylan. =) Vietnam War Protests. USS Pueblo. Seeing the computer where my cousin worked at Rand and being amazed we could type questions on a Selectric and it would type back answers - it was a huge room of machinery, of course! Quilting - basket blocks by hand and hexagons. Avon. =) Big hair. Small wedding in 1966. We thought they'd never end!

  18. Hey Debby, love your pics. Great flowers, lovely and bright. Can't say I remember much of the 60's, I was born in June of 69, but all my brother's and my sister were still living at home, and my sister spent lots of time with me, so I'm sure it was amazing!

  19. I love your orange flower with the batik petals. It's amazing. I didn't arrive on the scene until '77, so I don't know much about the 60s, though the civil rights movement stands out in the history books. BTW your picture post-curlers is gorgeous.

  22. The 60's were late elementary and junior high school years for me, and the very beginning of high school. I wore the same rollers in my hair. We wore skirts to school - I remember plaid skirts to around the knee, with knee socks and cardigan sweaters. I listened to some Neil Diamond, Motown, and liked the Beatles in their earlier years. Oh, and weren't the Monkeys then too? Your flowers are so much prettier than the ones then!

    ReplyDelete
  23. Ohh what fun Debby!! I love how you cut your flowers apart and re made them. Everything turned out fantastic. I was right there with you in the 60s as you got to see yesterday on my day. thanks for a great giveaway

  24. Debby, I loved looking at the pictures of you,,,,you were and still are a very pretty girl. The flower petal batiks was a great idea.. 43. What a fun blog you put together today! Looks like I'm 3 years younger than you. I remember getting color TV just in time for the 1968 Democratic Convention - big stuff! And rolling hair with orange juice cans (weird). And watching our men land on the moon. And for a special treat, Mom would take us to the A&W for a root beer on a hot summer night. And then came junior high - argh.

Thanks for the memory trip! Love those fabrics.

  51. Lovely! I like how you rearranged the flowers to make a whole new look. I wasn't born in the 60s but I remember watching the Beach Party movies as a kid during the summers. Not sure if they depict the true 60s or not, but they sure were fun to watch. :)

    ReplyDelete
  52. How fun to see you as a girl! Do you remember using orange juice cans to roll your hair? And trying to sleep on them??? (That was before they finally came out with curlers big enough for that straight look!)

  57. Well, I happen to love your first attempt... I can see an entire quilt with blocks like that. Your batik petals block is gorgeous too... I would make either in a new york minute. :)

I remember getting to do my granny Ella's hair in the 60's while I was growing up. She would wash her hair and then I would take little snippets, curl it around my finger, lay it flat on her head in a coil and put a bobby pin through it. I did all of her hair like that. This was done on Saturday night so her hair would look good for church on Sunday. I have no idea how she slept on those things!

  73. Debby-You would never believe how San Jose looks now! I have dinner with my sister who lives there once a week. I escaped the latter half of the sixties in SF by going to a more traditional college town in NoCal valley. I met my husband at CCSF but he went in the army and served in Vietnam so we didn't get married until early '70's. Now my daughter lives in the Haight because it's near her work and we live in the 'burbs.
Your batik projects are far-out! I love the hexies and the flower power. Batiks are one of my favorite and I'm constantly using/collecting them. Just finished a quilt for a friend. Thanks for sharing.

  81. Beautiful work! I love how you quartered the flower and put it back together, also they way you used the flower as a center and added petals. Both are very creative! The 60's were such a dynamic era. There is so much to remember--the civil rights movement, assassinations, Kent State, the Vietnam War, hippies, folk music, protest songs, etc. I graduated from high school in 1967, went to college, and got married during the 60's. My husband's first car looked something like the one in your picture. He had a '49 Plymouth. Such an unsettling time, but lots of good memories.

You didn't hear of all the violence, as kids, we could walk all over town and our parents didn't worry. Just be home for supper. We didn't sit in front of the TV or computers. We were outside playing with the neighbor kids. I have many good memories.

  84. Great blog post..I graduated in 1969 so I look on the 60's as a wonderful memory and with fondness. Wanting to be a hippie, loving batiks and tie dyes, sewing far-out outfits to wear. 91. wonderful pictures. You are still pretty. Your quilts are awesome. I was born in '58 so remember only a little of the 60's. But I really do remember wearing hip huggers and bell bottoms. And getting to let some of my midriff show. Mom wouldn't let me wear a mini skirt except in the house. At the time I couldn't understand. When my daughter wanted to wear a mini skirt at the age of 10 I totally got it. LOL.

  92. Debbie, I can relate to all that you said about the "big" hair and the big rollers. I had curly hair and I used the big rollers to make my hair straight. 99. I don't remember much about the 60's because I was born in 1961. All I know is that being an Air Force family we moved a lot in the 60's...we lived in 3 different states and England during that time. I love your table runner. Thank you for sharing! anglanouette at gmail dot com

  100. Totally relate. Your pictures could be of me at the same time period in Sunland, CA (SoCal). I remember my boyfriend had a large flower attached to the antena of his VW Bug.

  101. I remember that in the early 60's, we weren't allowed to wear slacks to school. It was a great day when my high school allowed us to wear granny dresses (long prairie style dresses). Wearing protest buttons created a lot of controversy in school. What a decade!

  102. I wasn't born yet but my brother and sister were babies. My mom says she doesn't remember all the wild stuff you hear about. She was too busy with babies to worry about it!

  103. I remember getting my Barbie dolls in 1963 with clothes that hung all over the Christmas tree at my grandmother's house. That's because she made them all for me but told me Santa had left them there for me because he knew I'd be visiting. They were my prize possesions and I still have both the dolls and the clothes. I also remember no AC in homes, cars, schools, or churches. Going to JCPenney on Saturday in the hot southern summer was a real treat because they did have AC. I remember watching Captain Kangaroo, Looney Tunes, and other black and white TV shows. Would that we could go back to those days, even if soup beans and cornbread were standard fare for supper every night.

  104. Well I was around in the 60's (just) but I remember nothing about them except the music! I had 3 older sisters and the record player was always blaring out the current hits, the Beatles and the Everley Brothers were two favourites!

I did learn to drive in a Volkswagen bug...so hip! Pink foam rollers that didn't allow my hair to ever dry. Your curly flip is groovy! My favorite piece you created is the petals around the flower center! Gorgeous!! Thanks for a fun hop and a generous give. Creative Stitching Bliss...

  117. I was born in the 60's so I don't remember much. I do remember the first day of Kindergarten and having to take naps in the middle of the classroom floor. If you didn't sleep, you had to be really quiet so the other kids could nap. I did get my "first kiss" in kindergarten, too, so that was memorable!

  118. I was a HS 60's gal too. Lots and lots of memories. My brother brought a brand new Volkswagen beetle home from Germany. We were one of the first in Salt Lake City in get a bug and the only one that color for a long time. I was just learning to drive and that stick shift and the hills we lived on didn't get along all that well. Loving the trip down memory land. Thanks.

I remember my mom and aunts would get together and do their hair all day... They all had long hair and one aunt always had a bee hive hairdo...lol..they worked on aunt Bonnie's hair all day. And I loved all the old cars and trucks. My mom used to play Elvis on the radio constantly and sing along..those were the days...good memories

I was in the 6th grade, but remember my mom sewing and the rolling our hair with big rollers and using the hair dryer that sat on the table that had a bonnet to cover your head. I still have the hair dryer and it works. I love the colorful batiks. I am ready to try making something using the hexie blocks.

What do I remember about the 60's: I was born and raised in SF...catholic grade school with uniforms, skinny as a stick with glasses...I lived four blocks from the beach and two from the zoo! Ha! THAT beats everything! We had a near 'tidal wave' one year when I was at a birthday party a block from the beach! But I LOVE the beach... Ah.. such memories...Would love to win those batiks... Am new to the Quilt world, and want to give it a try with smallish projects! Hugs!

I, too, thought the first block wasn't up to your standards but, WOW, did you ever turn it around and made some fabulous blocks. Let's see...60s...a super group of friends that are still friends and love spending time together, a young hubby that stole my heart away, bell bottoms and a figure to go with them (!), twistin' the night away with 60s music... What fun, what memories, what a life!

I graduated from high school in '67, husband (then fiance) went to Viet Nam in '68, stepped on a landmine and was sent home with only a crushed ankle they were able to save, and married him in '69. I remember hair rollers. I had fairly long hair at the time and tried using orange juice cans to get a really soft curl. Glad I didn't get into the hippie culture, thank goodness.
