Tasty Leftovers and Scrap Buster Quilts

I have been thinking about all my scrap buster quilts and how I should begin sharing them here in blogville. Over the years I've done many articles for Quilt Magazine about how to pull all those scraps that gather under my cutting table into tasteful quilts. Stay tuned for some tutorials on that, but I want to show you a few to get you interested:

Tasty Leftovers #3
OK. Where's Tasty Leftovers #1? I'm looking. I'm looking . . .

This was a magazine cover, too. One of the publishers wanted to buy it. I couldn't part with it (and still own it).

A class I taught in my Kaffe Fassett Club at Intown Quilters (Atlanta). We gathered all our leftover strings and strips and we pieced on 8-1/2" x 11" rectangles of newsprint. I had this quilted and gifted to my daughter's mother in law after surgery. Isn't it a happy quilt?

Here is one of my students' quilts:

And a REAL oldie, one of the first I did by string piecing on paper:

String pieced stars
This quilt was one of two quilts I got from my string pieced squares of newsprint. I'll be sharing that one, too.

So, stay tuned for more scrap buster quilts and ideas. We all have piles of scraps and I was asked often to share my tips for Scrap Deliverance. I hope you've enjoyed the few I showed today.

  1. Pretty quilts. I really like Leftovers #3 a lot. I'm not necessarily a pink person so I don't know what is drawing me to that one. Maybe now that I have a 3 yr old granddaughter living here who wears pink ALL the time, I'm starting to like it more? LOL

  2. Absolutely love the purples and lime green, 2 of my favorite colors. And together they are just stunning.

  4. Debby, on Tasty Leftover # 3 I especially like how the outer part of the set-in triangles are part of the green accent border. It really sets off the mitered on-point blocks nicely. (jane herbst at roadrunner dot com).

  5. Love, love, love scrap quilts! Your strings on 8-1/2"x11" sheets of newsprint have gotten me to thinking. I could do the same thing on Ricky Tims Stable Stuff but wouldn't have to waste time taking out all that paper. I feel a new project coming on...

  6. It will be so great to see how you organize scraps to then make quilts! I don't have a few piles of scraps, I confess it is a far larger problem! Hope you are thawing out!
