Quilts from Jelly Rolls and a FREE Pattern

Jelly rolls. Why that name was given to bundles of 2-1/2" strips, I have no clue. But I do remember when they first hit the quilting scene many years ago. I was an editor with Quilt Magazine and we began to design projects with them. Fabric companies began sending us lots of them!

Here is one of the first: Spring Fling by Moda.

Spring Fling
I designed a simple and fun quilt that is a variation on a Rail Fence.

Blank Fabrics sent me a few so I could design some projects for them. This was a set of black and white prints that I used my Tessellating Stars pattern for. If I can find the pdf for this, I'll share it later this week. Each block is 12" x 12".

I had a set of reds. Here is what I designed with those. I called it Red Hot Flash. It is sewn with NO templates, strips of reds and white (in sets of 3) are sewn and then cut into squares and then into triangles.

Then I had what I called Pocket Change (similar to 1,000 Coins).

And one more. This was made with the Inspiration Collections. I LOVE these turquoises and still have some of them (oldie but goodies). One set of 2-1/2" strips. I have the pattern here and will share it later.

Do you have jelly rolls? I no longer have them in that format, but you can always cut 2-1/2" strips and mix and match for these fun quilts. Hope you were inspired to go looking for your own sets of Jelly Rolls.

  1. jelly rolls, a fun precut. getting to be awefully expensive though. they used to be a less expensive way to get a whole collection of fabrics.....
thanks for the hot flash, you always have great designs.

    1. Yes, they used to be affordable. I like to cut my own - a great way to use up various yardages. Red Hot Flash was fun to make!

  3. Hi Debby! I do have a few jelly rolls in my stash. I love that they represent a whole line of fabrics and the variety that provides. I don't love that they are cut consistently NOT 2.5". Boy, your Red Hot Flash pattern has a lot of movement in it. Thanks for sharing. I hope you are doing well and taking care. ~smile~ Roseanne

    1. I agree, Roseanne, with the various widths that some jelly rolls have. That's why I like to cut my own strips. Doing well here in Virginia!

    1. Hi, Susan. I don’t have any jelly rolls either, but these were made with vendors’ bundles.

I’ll find the black and white pattern and post it soon. We all can cut 2-1/2” strips from our yardage!

Thanks for letting me know your thoughts!
