The Scraps Were Calling to Me

You've seen these paper pieced coffee cups here before. In fact, I've made at least a half dozen sets, but I've given them away and I realized I have no small gifts on hand for an unexpected occasion to need something to share. I pulled out some scrap Kaffe Fassett Corsage fabrics the other day. As you can see, there are several that are chopped off with only partial motifs, especially on the selvedge end!

Various scraps with partial motifs

(I do plan on piecing some of those partial motifs together.) I pulled 4 motifs (one of each color) with my Paper Pieced Coffee Cups in mind. They finish to 7" and are a perfect size for a mug rug. I squeezed the life out of some gray fabric and put all the pre-cut patches together, ready to stitch. Yes, those little cup handles have fusible webbing on the back, too.

I used a freezer paper window template to capture just what I wanted of each motif. These are also cut oversized so I don't have to fiddle with alignment for the paper piecing.

This is what I was working with a few months ago, again, with the Corsage fabric. They are whole motifs, but as you will see, I had to chop a lot of them up anyway!

Here is what I pieced on Friday. I will be quilting these this week. I first need to raw edge appliqué around those cup handles.

My latest paper pieced Coffee Cups

I made a quilt from this pattern about 16 years ago and it was published in Quilt Magazine. It is based on a vintage pattern from the Kansas City Star in the 1930s!

You can see all of the various renditions of these blocks in my Etsy shop. But here's one set that I quilted in a simple, straight line way. This is my plan for the ones I made the other day.

Now, we know that the holidays are coming and it's always nice to have something small on hand for a quick gift. These have never failed to delight the recipient. These are also fun to make with a unique motif in the center. Do you remember the ones I made with the Windham sugar skull fabrics (the Fiesta Collection)?
