Fun Children's Panels and a Giveaway

I have a winner: Susan L. of Connecticut. Congratulations, Susan.

Thanks to everyone who left a comment. Stay tuned for more fabric giveaways!

Storybook VIII (that's 8 in Roman numerals, btw!) is the sweetest reproduction 1930s collection. Believe it or not, there are 52 different prints/skus. It came out several years ago and I have many of the prints. But the one that tells a story is the one that tells a story!

I was able to get 3 sets from the yard of fabric and decided to NOT make another quilt for my granddaughter (and her mother thanks me). I took the 7 panels and machine stitched them to card stock so she and her brother Javier can actually read them as a book. What do you think?

Storybook VIII panels

The 7 panels are NOT the same size. That's because they were printed in a random arrangement on the yardage. Notice the pink card at the top right with the dancing bunny. I had to cut triangles off the corners because it couldn't be cut square (or the bunny would have lost his head!) You have to get creative with the setting and I KNOW you can do it!

I have made many quilts using reproduction fabrics. Windham has rolled out several. Here's one that ran in the Keepsake Catalog a few years ago. It features Storybook Vacation. I used my dresden butterflies pattern.

Storybook Vacation Butterflies

I bet you're asking: OK. Where's the GIVEAWAY? I have one set of these panels cut out and ready for you to make into a quilt or story cards or whatever. I'll throw in 5 long quarters (9" x 44") and two extra reds (not quite fat quarters). How's that?

Storybook Giveaway

Rules for the Giveaway:

  • Must be living in the USA. International postage is prohibitive for me and I'm truly sorry!
  • Tell me how long you've been following my blog (an estimate is fine).
  • What is your favorite style of fabrics (batik? Civil War? Modern? 1930s?)
  • I MUST have your email. If in doubt, then send me a separate email with your answers: kratovil@his.com
Contest is over Monday, April 12 at midnight EDT.

  1. I have been following you for awhile but not sure how long. I love all fabric. Batiks, 30's anything goes. I must admit I gravitate toward bright. Jmikebalou (at) aol (dot) com

    1. I certainly do recognize you! Yes, I love all fabrics too. Never met a fabric I didn't like (ok - that's not true. One weird collection a few years ago by Benartex - I had to get rid of it!)

  2. I may have been following you for ten years...it's hard to say--I can't really remember not following you! I love batiks, love solids that have a nice hand, love Kaffe-style florals, and also have a fondness for Civil War fabrics with their surprisingly modern designs and bright colors. Plus, my mom was a baby of the 30's, and the first quilt I remember seeing was her baby quilt, so the first thing I collected was 30's prints. I guess I'm like a lot of quilters--my stash has a lot of everything, and I love a lot of everything, likely in the descending order I listed. (I'm still coming up with styles: polka dots! Christmas fabric! I'll stop now.) My email address is wordygirl (at) earthlink (dot) net

    1. Hi, Beth. I remember you with the "wordy girl" moniker! Yes, my stash has it all, too. I just like to look at it and realize I will NEVER, EVER be able to sew through all of it. But I can try, right?

  3. I must be following you since I started quilting. That was when my son went in the Navy. (Ray told me to find a hobby and I did.) He did the gulf war. Now his son is in the Navy. My husband, also a Navy vet, picked up the Apollo 11 and 12 astronauts. His ship, Hornet CVS12, was the Apollo Recovery Ship. I have some great pictures of the splash down and the capsule on his ship. I guess I love all fabric with no real favorite. I tend to go for the brighter prints and colors. We moved 12 years ago from upstate NY to the Carolina beach.

    1. Wow, Susie. Your family is filled with heroes! God bless all those Navy guys. I tend to go with the brighter, stronger colors, too. I do recognize your name as a follower; many thanks for your interest!

  4. I've been following a long time. At least six to eight years. My favorite fabrics at the moment are batiks, followed by Civil War repros. But, I'm now starting to get into more vintage looking feminine florals and little dots and colorful stripes. I've also been collecting panels but have to figure out what to do with them. 1. Now, that's an amazing combination: Civil War and batiks. But, I've mixed all sorts of fabric personalities and it's not against the law, now is it? Panels are fun, but they can be challenging. Maybe I'll do a Panel Week sometime - what a great idea!

  5. I have been following your blog for quite a few years. My favorite fabrics are batiks, but I have such a hard time cutting them. Other than batiks I am drawn to bright, wild, and geometric prints.

    1. Hi, Robin. Yes, I have all sorts of fabrics that I just can't cut into. I have several pieces that are over 25 years old - can you believe it? But, I should just make them into quilt backs and then I can enjoy seeing the whole piece.

  6. Good morning, Debby! What a great idea, sewing the "book" pieces to card stock. It will hold up well yet give your granddaughter a different reading experience. Brilliant. I've been following you for a few years - I'd say since around 2017. That's sweet of you to offer a giveaway. Good luck to everyone. I'd say my favorite fabrics are bright colors and geometric prints. I finally used some 30s reproduction fabrics for the first time this year in a lap size quilt. ~smile~ Roseanne

    1. Hi, Roseanne. My kids do NOT want any more quilts, so reverting to those cards was the only way I could sneak those cute panels into my daughter's house for my granddaughter! I especially love bright fabrics, too. Well, I probably love them all, if truth be told!

  7. I have been following you for a long time, maybe 8 years or so. They saw time flies when you are having fun, and it has certainly has been fun. As to a favorite fabric, that too is hard, but looking at my quilts, I seem to have a lot more of 30's prints. They remind me of dresses my mom used to make me. Thanks for all you share. 1. Hi, Nancy. Thanks for letting me know you're having fun reading my blog. I have SO many quilts and variations and in 29 years, that's a LOT! At least my one daughter (Audrey) is in love with my 1930s quilts and has told me that she wants all of them bequeathed to her! And then there's my huge box of authentic feed sacks! I just can't part with them!

  8. I have been following since 2013. My how time flies. I would have said 5 years, but I went and looked at some of the first downloads you offered and the earliest date was October 3, 2013. I am not sure I have a favorite style of fabric. I have always liked Jinny Beyer's fabric lines. Last year I became fond of batiks. The fabrics you are giving away remind me of fabrics my grandmother used in the baby quilts she made for my siblings and me.

    1. Wow, Susan. That's near the beginning. I think I launched my blog in 2012, not even thinking that anyone would come and visit. While I don't have the thousands many popular bloggers have, that's not why I did it in the first place. I wanted to be able to publish anything I wanted without having to go into print again and have an editor always raise the ax to what he/she didn't like! I am the Queen of this blog, right?

My favorite fabrics are batik and everything else ....flowers, brights and fun prints..

    1. Hi, Radar's Grammy. Yes, brights and flowers absolutely are high on the list of favorites for me. I always let the fabric tell me what it wants and not the other way around. I am hostage to their opinion and they've never let me down!

  11. Good Morning Debby. How long have I been following you? Now, that is a good question. My grandson gave me his old computer 13 years ago. I didn't have a clue what a blog was or even how to use the computer. But I did learn and started following you sometime after that. I know it has to be over 5 years at least. I have learned a lot from you.
Thanks for the chance to win. My favorite fabrics are the 30's with Batiks running a close behind.

  14. We made a major move in 2011 and I have been getting your blog updates since sometime after we moved here, maybe 9 or 10 years, maybe before. Time has run together with so many significant changes and challenges in the last 10 years. These prints would be fun to make up for my new great niece. I like having small projects for FMQ practice. I can see a wallhanging and a doll quilt. I just gave her the doll cradle my dad made me. It is going to be fun sewing for a little girl again.

    1. OOPS!, I was going to add that I have been collecting 30's prints for awhile, waiting for a special little girl to come along. They appeal to me but so does most cotton quilting fabric in general. I like batiks and most bright prints with flowers.

    2. Sally. I, too, am partial to 1930s prints. I have made quite a few using them over the years. Windham Fabrics has rolled out quite a few collections and each one is better than the last. Thanks for stopping by all these years!

I'm taking some EPP with me today when I babysit the grandkids. They like to play with the hexagons and other shapes. Thanks for stopping by! And let me see some of your EPP work (send to kratovil@his.com).

    1. Hi, Sharon. Well, keep following because I plan on some other fabric giveaways. I have a LOT of Civil War fabrics and batiks. I realized that it's impossible for me to ever sew through it all, unless I was living in the time of Noah - and we know how old he was!
