Raleigh, NC Sewing Expo Classes

Back in town again after a few years away. I'm excited to be back in the classroom with motivated students. The Raleigh Show is August 5-7, 2021. What am I teaching?

Machine Quilting: Basics and Beyond, Thursday August 5: 8:30 - 11:30 am

Start your quilting experience on the right foot --- with Debby’s liberating, beyond-straight-lines, feed-dogs-down process. You’ll enjoy her simple methods for taking your stitches beyond beginners’ meanders and loops. In the dozen years she’s been teaching beginning machine quilting, Debby’s students have been most comfortable following shapes, and so she gives you lots of practice time during class to use stencil shapes and one of her favorites, freezer paper shapes. Discussion includes quilting blocks (no matter the size) and borders, and a treasure trove of samples to illustrate how dynamic her KISS (Keep It Small and Simple) quilting style can be for you, too.

I supply all the quilting samples and stencils. Just come ready to play!

Playing within the confines of a CD circle (no kidding!)

And one more . . . How about those pebbles?

Diamonds and Four Patch, Thursday August 4: 1 - 4 pm

Try your hand at stitching 4 Patch Diamonds and setting them with a bold and beautiful single print diamond. There are NO set-in seams or funky templates. All are rotary cut using a standard acrylic ruler with a 60-degree marked line. The option of making a variety of sizes will appeal to everyone - from child's quilt to lap and twin size. Bring your own fabric, see supply list for details.

Diamonds and Four Patch: 47" x 60"

Big Block Palm Quilt: Friday August 6 - 8:30 - 11:30 am

Recreate this vintage Palm block in a 10 inch size without weird templates. Experience the trick in class: it’s paper pieced in ONE section, using an off-center Log Cabin technique. Amazing! Make 8 blocks and learn how to set them on point to create this 42 x 56 inch quilt. Pre-cutting of your fabrics before class gives you a head start!

The Bubbles Quilt. Friday, August 6: 1 - 4 pm

Now you can make a hexagon quilt without y-seams! A real scrap buster project, this is a perfect way to use all the leftover 2 1/2-inch jelly roll strips in your stash. Everything is pieced in vertical rows, so it’s easy to make this as big as you wish once you see how easy the technique is. Quilt size as shown: 41 x 51 inches.

Big Block Hexagons. Saturday, August 7 from 1 - 4 pm

Are you looking for a creative way to use a stack of 10-inch squares? Often referred to as Layer Cakes (yum, yum), we often wish there was some icing to go along with them, right? 32 squares (plus some light background fabric) will make this Big Block Hexagon quilt. We cut our hexagons – and setting triangles - with a multi-sized 60-degree triangle ruler (included in the kit fee). (If you have your own 60-degree ruler, bring it to class and Debby will rebate you the price of her ruler). Bring your own fabric, see supply list for details.

Big Block Hexagons: 50" x 59"

Hope to see you there!

  3. My sister and I took one of your classes in Raleigh many years back. We thoroughly enjoyed it. I still refer to "Super Size 'Em" often for quilt inspiration. The Expo was such a fun experience - we took several different classes in a variety of topics & genres. Hope you have a great time.
