Michael Miller Monday with Divided Diamonds

I occasionally sew and design for Michael Miller Fabrics. They have a new feature on their Facebook page that shares quilts made using their collections. Of course, I have quite a few! Here is the one that they have today (the first one in the Monday series). I call it Divided Diamonds. I used their Tropical Batiks fabrics along with some Fairy Frost.

Divided Diamonds: 18" block

I was able to squeeze some border fabrics out of the fat quarters. Yes, they are two different prints! I shared some of my steps for paper piecing this block a few years ago. I upsized my 12" block pattern (as it was featured in Quiltmaker Magazine 100 Blocks, 2012) to a whopping 18". Then you get to see more of the fabric!

Then we remove the paper. Make 8 of these.

Then I transferred my background template to freezer paper and cut one out. This is 9-1/2" high.

Flip flop the template to conserve fabric and cut out another one.

I have made this block several times, so it was easy to get the kinks out before I wrote the pattern! This is my block that appeared in the magazine (12"). It is a real block and once I made and sent it, it became a prize for one lucky winner.

So, I made another one for ME! I converted the center circle to four triangles. Easy.

Then I made it in Kaffe Fassett Fabrics. Well, just that purple print is KF.

I had another one that I added some extra borders to. Notice the center has NOTHING where all those seams come together! I donated this to a local kids' charity.

I still have my teaching samples. They are crying out to be finished. I also printed another 8 foundations to make another 18" block. Of course, I may piece more blocks until I run out of fabric (using that Tropical Batiks/Fairy Frost combo). We'll see . . .

You can find the pattern for BOTH the 12" and 18" blocks and the small quilt shown at the top of this page in my Etsy shop: Divided Diamonds.

  2. Each one is beautiful and appealing, as different as the fabrics are.
