Hey, Hey and a Little Crochet

I tend to play with my yarn more in the Winter. I guess because it's warm and snuggly and soft. I am not very creative with what I do - mainly squares, rectangles and circles. Here's something I crocheted in a class at my local library. The teacher is from Italy and is very creative. This little sample was the basis for some weaving we were supposed to do. I didn't want to do it her way!

I don't think she was happy about that, but hey - I'm an adult and I just wanted to do something different. I took another project's supplies and used those to let my granddaughter Eva get creative. This is what she did last Saturday. She totally enjoyed this, weaving in and out using VERY fluffy yarn. She took it home and I bet it is a special blanket for one of her Barbies.

Another creative thing Patrizia taught us (which I caught onto right away) was this braided headband. Here are a few of her samples:

And another one, this time braided:

I made one for my granddaughter for Christmas in pink (her favorite color).

She doesn't give us patterns. She just tells us what to do. Some students are lost. I decided to write up directions with illustrations (which is what 99% of yarnies need here in the USA). It helped a few other students (and me, too!)

I crochet throughout the year, making scarves and cowls for giving to a local charity. Here are 10 that I donated to a group that rescues women from human trafficking (yes, it happens here in Northern Virginia!)

I'm working with my last skein of a baby yarn and I'll crochet until I run out! That's my approach to quilting, too. I guess I'm just a risk taker. This is called Baby Blossom the yarn at the top). I made a scarf for my granddaughter with the pink. The blue was a hat but I didn't like the way it turned out and took it apart!

So now the blue is becoming another scarf!

I had some of the darker pink left and made her a little doll blanket last year. Surprise! It's a rectangle! I love that it has those rows of extra color every few inches.

I love variegated yarn the best. I wish I had some more of this Baby Blossom, but it's not like I don't have 2 drawers full of yarn to keep me busy!

Are you a Chick with Sticks (knitting) or a Happy Hooker (crochet)? What sorts of projects do you enjoy?

  1. I used to crochet and loved it. My favorite pattern is to alternate single and double crochet across, then come back with double in the singles and single in the doubles. It makes a kind of popcorn stitch, and all you need is an odd number of chains. So easy to remember for 50 years! LOL I don't do it now, or not much at a time, because of carpel tunnel issues. I like what your little one did with your piece!

  2. I used to be a Chick with Sticks, but have not done so in years. I have tried crochet several times, but haven't been able to get the hang of it. All I can do is one long chain.
