Sunrise, Sunset and Time Changes

I really don't like this time of year when it gets dark so early. And next week on November 1 and 2 we all get slammed with a sunset at 5pm or so. I finished a quilt top I began 15 years ago based on a modified vintage Rising Sun pattern. I converted it to paper piecing and made a few small quilts with my first try.

I call this first one Casablanca Sunrise. That's because the fabric collection was named Casablanca! The vintage Rising Sun block has a quarter circle base. I used a triangle.

And in deep reds from 2014:

It became a workshop and I made some more samples. This next one I named Milady's Fans and added another round of these paper pieced blocks.

And how about orange?

I tweaked the 7" paper piecing pattern and began another journey. This time I call it Glorious Sunrise (yet, I love seeing the sunrise every morning since I'm up at 5:30 am). Yes, I tweaked it a LOT!

I went on to squeeze as many blocks as I could from the blenders I had on hand. Then I thought about making it more interesting by adding some flying geese. I added borders and came up with this just recently. It's in my closet waiting to be picked up by a local guild for a charity quilt. We like to make larger quilts to keep adults and teens warm in the very chilly cancer infusion centers at the local hospital.

I think I'm going to print a few of these foundations and make a single 4-unit block. Here's what 4 of the units look like before seams. Each unit has 4 different colors plus the blue background. It's a great use of blenders. These are from Blank Quilting 15+ years ago!

I have some Benartex fabrics left over from the Celestial Skies collection and I may just work with those. Right now I'm just thinking and trying to keep my mind off of the coming early sunsets!

No pattern - just a riot of color today!
