Quilts of Valor

Today is Veteran's Day in America. We celebrate and honor those who serve and have served in our military. There are so many fabulous groups that bring attention to this and two of those are the Quilts of Valor and the Honor Flights.

Here is the calendar block for today as a tribute to our veterans:

Double Star: 12"

And the block sewn by Diane L, one of my Calendar Girls:

A fellow quilting teacher, Didi Salvatierrais an award winning professional fiber artist. Her quilts reflect a love of color and texture while incorporating techniques of traditional quiltmaking. Her passion combines modern and traditional techniques. Didi spends most of her quilting time these days making Quilts of Valor and participating in the Blue Ridge Honor Flights. Let's see one of her Quilts of Valor:

What a wonderful way with a gorgeous panel! Here's what Did says: Doing both Quilts of Valor and the Blue Ridge Honor Flight is my passion. So, so special! Both my parents served in WWII; they met in Antwerp,  Belgium, married in 1947, my Dad used the GI bill to finish college and I came along in 1951.

I was captivated by her clever use of leftover blocks in borders. Who says you can't make 8 blocks work in the four corners?

Again, a simple panel (with a beautiful picture), but so fabulously surrounded in a very clever way. I bet you're going to save this photo and use this technique on your next quilt! And - hey! You don't have to have long pieces of your border prints!

Let's see two more of her quilts for the QOV soldiers:
