Velvet Stars - Stolen But Not Forgotten

Ten years ago this month I had a suitcase of 30 (GASP!), yes THIRTY quilts stolen while on a teaching trip to California. Never a one showed up, but I try to think of it this way: they are hanging on the giant quilt rack in the sky, right?

I blogged about it a few years ago in Ode to My Stolen Quilts (clever, huh?)

Anyway, I was thinking about Velvet Stars today and thought: this would make a NICE FREE PATTERN! Then "she" would look down on me gently from her starry perch and thank me for remembering her.

Velvet Stars, 48" x 62"
The block is 12" x 12". This comes from my first quilt book: Bold, Black and Beautiful Quilts, AQS 2004. The pattern is a multi-page pdf and includes templates, though I'm sure you can use the stitch-and-flip method using a rectangle and square to get those star points.

Join me, won't you, in a remembrance party for Velvet Stars! Select your brightest prints or even work it up in black and red. She's a star worth the time and I know you'll enjoy the celestial ride!

FREE PATTERN: Velvet Stars

  1. Lovely pattern - just right for using the solid colors I've been collecting. Thank you.

  2. Thank you for sharing this beautiful pattern. I'm sorry someone took it from you.

  3. Thank you for sharing this beautiful pattern. I'm sorry someone took it from you.

  4. Sew many possibilities with that star pattern. Would make a great Quilts of Valor. Thanks for sharing.

  5. Thanks for sharing this pattern. I have a lot of ideas for this one. I am sorry someone stole all those quilts and you never recovered any of them.

  6. What a heart breaking thing to happen. And a generous design to share with us all!

  7. Thank you for the pattern. I love it and it will make a great red/white/blue soldier quilt. I remember that happening, and I've always wondered where they went. Sometime this spring, I will start working on this one for American Hero Quilts.

  8. I just finished the velvet stars quilt top. SO MANY comments on it--posted on FB. Will start quilting it tomorrow--I LOE it and it was made all from scraps I had on hand--trying to get all my scraps used before I buy anymore fabric!!

  9. Was the quilt made out of velvet?
I'm sorry that happened to you. I sure wish the quilts would show up one of these days. It would be nice to know where they have been.
