On the Road Again Teaching!

After a 14 month hiatus at home (but also teaching virtually) I am going back on the road to teach in a real classroom! I'll be in Akron (Cleveland area) Ohio July 15 - 17, 2021 for the Original Sewing and Quilt Expo.  Here is what I'm teaching:

Big Block Hexagons - Thursday, July 15 from 8:30 am to 11:30 am.

Are you looking for a creative way to use a stack of 10-inch squares? Often referred to as Layer Cakes (yum, yum), we often wish there was some icing to go along with them, right? 32 squares (plus some light background fabric) will make this Big Block Hexagon quilt. We cut our hexagons – and setting triangles - with a multi-sized 60-degree triangle ruler (included in the kit fee). (If you have your own 60-degree ruler, bring it to class and Debby will rebate you the price of her ruler). Bring your own fabric, see supply list for details.

What about using some awesome novelty prints? A perfect child's quilt. NO Y-SEAMS!!

Diamonds and Four Patch: Thursday, July 15, from 1 - 4 pm. Check out the supply list to see how you can make this in 3 sizes! Click the link to see 2 other versions.

Try your hand at stitching 4 Patch Diamonds and setting them with a bold and beautiful single print diamond. There are NO set-in seams or funky templates. All are rotary cut using a standard acrylic ruler with a 60-degree marked line. The option of making a variety of sizes will appeal to everyone - from child's quilt to lap and twin size. Bring your own fabric, see supply list for details.

Flying Swallows
: Friday, July 16 from 8:30 - 11:30 am. Click that link to see another sample using bright colors!

Recreate this vintage quilt using NO templates and your rotary cutter and ruler. 45-degree diamonds and simple half-square triangles swirl around a center as swallows might in the air. No y-seams make this doable for just about any quilter (who can sew with an accurate 1/4-inch seam). Bring your own fabric, see supply list for details.

Three Dimensional Garden Quilt
: Friday, July 16 from 1 - 4 pm. I have kits ALL READY for you to just sit and stitch. This includes the binding, too!

Here’s your opportunity to expand your hand piecing skills with 3-Dimensional fabric techniques. Create a garden inspired mini quilt with folded fabric hexagons (our flowers), yo-yos (made from fabric circles), prairie points (from folded squares) and even bias binding for flower stems! Each student will then create her own unique assembly and add assorted buttons if desired. Kits will have similar fabric for samples as shown in a variety of color families. (Kit will include binding, batting, but not backing.)

Machine Quilting, Basics and Beyond
: Saturday, July 17 from 8:30 to 11:30 am

Start your quilting experience on the right foot --- with Debby’s liberating, beyond-straight-lines, feed-dogs-down process. You’ll enjoy her simple methods for taking your stitches beyond beginners’ meanders and loops. In the dozen years she’s been teaching beginning machine quilting, Debby’s students have been most comfortable following shapes, and so she gives you lots of practice time during class to use stencil shapes and one of her favorites, freezer paper shapes. Discussion includes quilting blocks (no matter the size) and borders, and a treasure trove of samples to illustrate how dynamic her KISS (Keep It Small and Simple) quilting style can be for you, too.

Playing within the confines of a CD circle (no kidding!)

And one more . . . How about those pebbles?

Hope to see you there! If you have any questions about any of these classes, don't hesitate to send me an email: kratovil@his.com.

  1. Hi Debby! How exciting and fun to be able to actually teach in-person again. I won't be in Ohio but there is always hope that our paths will cross someday. ~smile~ Roseanne
